Oh, I thought that was just a sentence fragment that belonged to the next sentence, just saying that Icefrog is with Valve, not Eul. I GUESS THAT'S EGG ON MY FACE

I've never heard of Eul working for Valve though.

Two out of three? Did you find out Eul was working on Dota 2 somewhere in between the sentence where you asked where he was and that two out of three sentence?

He literally did. It was a figurative question.

Direct quote from Gabe apparently.

"IceFrog was the catalyst; he's the main reason why we're making DOTA 2" -- says Johnson. "A lot of us are DOTA fans also from a game-design perspective, and at Valve we already have the original creator of DOTA, Eul." "So," continues Newell

Why shouldn't Valve use it? Nothing stopped the other guys from naming LoL or HoN "Dota 2," but they decided to pick different names, distancing themselves from Dota. Of course Valve would use this chance to name their Dota "Dota 2."

I still don't even know what DotA is. All I know is that it's related to Warcraft III in some way

Blizzard has no hope of winning this.

And yes, Valve does have the right to use the name "Dota 2" since they are making Dota 2. HoN changed several heroes and added plenty of new ones, even on release. The gameplay moved faster, and since release they have been making additional changes to further separate themselves from Dota. HoN did NOT want to be "Dota 2" -- they wanted to be the evolution of Dota, but some unfortunate decisions prevented it from kicking off.

LoL obviously didn't want the name "Dota 2." On their main page on release there was an entire page devoted to how the game was different from Dota and why they thought some of Dota's mechanics were bad design decisions.

Dota 2 IS Dota, but new. I can't think of any other appropriate name for it.

So, you think that they will copy everything over and then say "k, done, enjoy game, we out" ?

No, they are making the two games one in the same. Everything that happens to one gameplay-wise will happen to the other.

Dota 2 will always be Dota. Whether you're talking about Dota 1 or 2 doesn't matter, except for graphics and presentation. The only time Dota 2 will not be a remade copy of Dota 1 is when Icefrog stops developing Dota 1.

I really fail to see how this situation is equivalent to LoL or HoN or other Dota clones.

Never has been good, never will be good.

its way better than wc3. Well gameplay wise. Story and online stability? Ya WC3 kills it (and thats sad because wc3's story is garbage)

But anyway, screw blizzard. They have become the perfect summation of everything that is wrong about gaming today. Im not buying diablo 3 due to how ****y theyve become.

Oh, and the whole "blizzard has never released a bad game" phrase that tons of people constantly say has been false since at least 2007 and the burning crusade.

If I understand things properly, if Valve wins this they would own the trademark over the name DOTA. This would mean no one else could name their DOTA-like game "DOTA 3" or anything similar to "DOTA". Should Valve be able to do that? I think if Blizzard wins, the name "DOTA" is still free for anyone to use (so Valve could still name their game DOTA 2). I'm not entirely sure on that, though.

Didn't Team Fortress start off as a Quake mod? Isn't there some sort of cross-publisher-mod-to-retail precedent there?

that honestly has zero relevance to this, since Valve hired all the people who made that original mod, and since the name "Team Fortress" doesn't potentially refer to any trademarked elements of Quake

If Blizzard wins, they'll go and trade mark it for their " Blizzard all star Dota " thing they're developing. Probably claim it was " to keep the association of Dota with the warcraft 3 community " or some excuse.

This isn't about keeping the term Dota free, it's about Blizzard getting butt hurt over Valve grabbing it up before they did. Something pretty clear when they openly criticized Valve the moment they trade marked it.

Even so Valve is pretty damn lenient about their IPs. I mean, China is outright copying TF2, along with actual content from the game, and they could evidently care less.

Valve hired all the people who made Dota (Icefrog) and the name Dota doesn't refer to any trademarked elements of WC3, except for "Ancients", which, if I'm not mistaken, is a race of creatures in probably 50% of all sci-fi universes.

Unless you want to say that Valve had to hire Eul and Guinsoo also for this to be the same type of situation.

Does it matter if Value hired the developers of the original DOTA? They don't own the trademark since they never trademarked "DOTA". I'm not sure their opinion matters at all for determining if Value can get the Trademark or not.

If Valve fails to get the Trademark, probably the same reasons will prevent Blizzard as well. I guess Blizzard might still try to.

I'm sure Blizzard isn't doing this for the general benefit of DOTA fans or anything like that. However, if it isn't possible to claim exclusive access, Blizzard will want it so anyone (and thus themselves) can use DOTA and not just Valve. By coincidence this benefits people outside of Blizzard as well.

Lol. The expansions are not going to be $60. There was no third of a game released. SC2 is a full game in every single way. More of literally EVERYTHING than the vanilla version of StarCraft. Units, gameplay modes, things to do besides ladder. Hell the original StarCraft didn't even have a real ladder.
