Luna is very entertaining. And she's very loyal to Harry. She's also the only non-Gryffindor to participate in the battle of the ministry. But I kind of feel like we should've seen Ernie MacMillian there too. Still, she participated, and that makes her pretty awesome.
But Lupin... I think I like him more the more I think about it. I mean, he's the biggest influence for Harry. He's the non-Bully Marauder. He's cursed with being a werewolf. And he too participates in the battle of the ministry -- and he's there for Harry when Sirius dies. He's the last of the Marauders to die. His scene with Harry and the resurrection stone is great.
Lupin is also civil with Snape. And he seems to trust him because Dumbledore says so. And his reaction when Snape 'betrays' them... it's probably the best reaction.
"And Dumbledore believed that" said Lupin incredulously. "Dumbledore believed Snape was sorry James was dead? Snape hated James..."
I almost wish they had let Lupin join Harry on his journey, because that'd have been cool.
Still kind of mad that it's not Albus Remus Potter.

He is, I'd argue, the most useful father figure Harry ever gets. Dumbledore's too distant, Sirius too reckless (and thinks he's James) and Hagrid too bumbling. He protects and helps him but isn't afraid to tell him when he's been an idiot either. He's also, arguably, the most likeable and respectable of the adult cast despite his debilitating disease, and he completely bosses book three. Very underrated.
I like Luna too, but not as much as most people, I think. Wish she'd befriended the trio in first or second year.

Who knew the Rivalry Rumble would be so predictable? SuperNiceDog, that's who.
I don't think Hagrid was ever a father figure. Dumbledore, Sirius, and Lupin sure, but Hagrid was more of a friend and guardian than any kind of paternal figure.
Luna couldn't have befriended the trio in the first year, as she's a year younger than them.
Other than those two statements, I agree. Remus is easily the most responsible of Harry's father figures and doesn't get as much credit as he deserves.

Well, Trelawney DOES predict Harry having 12 kids. It's just more than 19 years later obviously.
James Sirius Potter Albus Severus Potter Lily Luna Potter Remus Rubeus Potter Minerva Nymphadora Potter Cedric Alastor Potter Uhh running out of ideas here.
Let's just hope Hedwig and Dobby stay OUT of the naming.
Also yeah, i think Luna becoming their friend in the second or even third year would've been better. If only because I think Harry needed a friend from the other houses.

I'll be honest here, I'm biased; I've dressed up as Luna for haloween. There's no way I'm voting for anyone else.
Remus has more character depth, no question. Getting to the point that he talks about abandoning his pregnant wife because he's worried his kids will be better off without him is...pretty dark.
Luna's got more style and humor, though, hands down. Loser's Lurgy.
And...honestly, Lupin's amount of screen time after book 3 is actually a little disappointing. Absent in book 4. Present for a few scenes in book 5, but he's definitely not the top pick for "person to put in a scene at Grimauld Place", but he gets a couple. Then book 6 he has little more than a cameo, and book 7 he has...two excellent scenes, and that's about it. Luna gets a lot of screen time in books 5 and 6, and probably still more than Lupin in book 7. Lupin definitely feels like he could have been improved by giving him a few more scenes throughout his story arc, instead of just snapshots where we're left thinking "oh, married and pregnant; when did that happen?" Luna, on the other hand, is pretty complete as-is.

These posts are making me appreciate Remus more, but he's still nowhere close to getting my vote against Luna. Until Luna goes up against Harry or Hermione, my vote is easy. She's funny and she's cool, she gets a lot of points for co-leading Dumbledore's Army in year 7. I also wish she had appeared earlier in the series - or better yet, had a bigger role in book 7.

Hey now, that sounds exactly like my opinion on Sirius sans the Halloween costume. ;)

Man that was such a great scene. Very eye-opening to Lupin's character. This whole time, he's put on this brave face when dealing with his own ailment, but when it comes to potentially damning another with the Werewolf Curse he can't think to anything but literally run away from the responsibility associated with it. And to think, this man always seemed the most responsible of the Marauder Crew. I mean, you never saw Remus assaulting Snape for no reason. He didn't stop them, but he wasn't there egging them on like Pettigrew. That said, he's still the most responsible of Harry's father figures.
I love how Harry's response to Remus' desperate plea to aide him is essentially "wtf no your family needs you, you selfish bastard" and it takes something like that earnest response to make him come to his senses. Ah... such good scenes.

I respect Lupin as a character, but I enjoy reading about Luna far more than I do with uncle Remus. Also the werewolf's name is "Remus Lupin"...really, Jo? Really? Fenrir Greyback's past is a little more vague so maybe he changed his name after getting wolfy...but Remus has parents, named Lupin, that gave him the name of someone nursed by a wolf for Merlin's sake!
