No I will not work your terrible 1:30 to 10:30 shift, because as far as you know, I have plans after 8. But I can work for the rest of the time before then.

Compromising. Because it seems like I'm sweet enough to accept your hours since I'm part time, but I'm not accepting your s*** shift because I'd still like to have at least part of my day.

I think "Nah sorry I can't today" is a better response.

Boy, you must really feel like you're sticking it to them by saying you'll work most of the shift.

What's wrong with a 1:30 to 10:30 shift? I always love working a full day rather than only a few hours.

I'm guessing the implication is that they tell you to not bother and find someone else who can cover the whole shift.

This is the best. And while it might SEEM unbelievable that you'd be out of town EVERY time they call you, if you stick to it every time, it becomes real. They just start to see you as the guy who travels a lot.

It's like calling in sick to work when you just don't wanna go. If you never do it, and come in when you actually ARE sick, when you call in sick randomly no one will believe you. But if you call in sick every so often, they'll stop doubting it and just be like yeah that guy's health isn't the best.

That's an interesting observation. People can be so easy to play.

Do you all work jobs like this? I never have. If I need to call in sick, I call in sick. Don't need to find someone else to go in for me. You know, because it's a real job. We all go in at the same time every day.

I don't get why you people wouldn't want more hours and more money >_>

But on the occasion that I'm tired and don't feel like going in I go with:

Listen to these guys.

I have a reputation to keep at my job as someone who always helps out. So if I keep saying that I can't come in, they won't call me. If they call me or ask me to work a shift that isn't closing (and they have done that often) then I can work that and get plenty of hours. So it's a reasonable compromise. I'm getting a full shift now, and I don't need to stay until close.

And closing is terrible because you run out of things to do and people to help by 8. So you stand there drooling for a while. I'm not sticking it to them at all- I'm just helping them enough where I don't have to waste my entire day at work til 10:30.
