Might as well take down another of my Final Four teams!

Did you really not choose a single 1 seed to make it to the final four?

I mean, I only had one, but seriously, that's a lot of upsets

I had UNC originally, but I felt bad picking three ACC teams to the Final Four, so I switched to Kansas.

Looks like I removed the wrong ACC team(s) from my Final Four!

I just realized, I was complaining about the lack of upsets up to a certain point and how all of the potential upset bids were falling short, and then BAM, Norfolk State > Missouri, Lehigh > Duke, Ohio > Michigan, USF > Temple. F***ing uncanny, seriously, it was like reverse murphy's law.

The Creighton/Alabama, Memphis/SLU, and Florida State/St. Bona games were all really good too. Best day of college basketball I recall in quite some time, even without having a horse in the race personally.

The hilarious thing is that I forgot that game even happened until well after all the games in the real tournament were done. Like I only just checked the score a couple hours ago. "Oh I wonder how Washington did. Oh they demolished Northwestern. K whatever."

The NIT is such a depressing wasteland of college basketball.

I can kind of root for Gonzaga but it's not really the same. All I can really do is root for exciting games and intriguing upsets.

24/32, still have all of my Final Four, seven of my Elite Eight, 13 of my Sweet 16.

Still, I'm very afraid that this coming round will ruin my bracket. My original bracket had Syracuse in the Final Four; I considered changing it after the announcement of Melo's ineligibility but decided to just make a new bracket with the changes instead. Also one of my bigger "surprise" Elite Eight teams barely managed to survive yesterday (Creighton--the reason I had them all the way to the Elite Eight is because I correctly predicted that both Temple and Michigan would be upset yesterday).

I stand corrected. Whoo Syracuse! Maybe my first instinct will have been the right one after all!

...Interestingly, I seem to remember debating the Syracuse-Wisconsin matchup for a long time when first making up the bracket, but not even thinking about the Syracuse-Ohio State one, and then I realized that and was like "wait, why did I not even consider the possibility of Ohio State beating Syracuse when I spent that long contemplating the possibility of Wisconsin doing it?" And I didn't have an answer for myself; I just decided to go with it.

Of course, in the "modified" bracket in which the now-weaker Syracuse does lose to Wisconsin, the Badgers then lose to Ohio State. Not that it matters one bit because as far as "Big"s go, Ten < East or 12. Honest to G-d, even though it cost me a Sweet 16 team I wasn't the slightest bit unhappy about Norfolk State's upset because I considered Mizzou to be the biggest threat to my "Marquette to Final Four" pick. Really should've known better--sure, Mizzou's a Big 12 team now, but they're headed to the SEC, where they'll fit right in with all of the other teams that are strong in football but tend to collapse in March. (Kentucky is the obvious exception to this. Seriously, Kentucky would make so much more sense if they were in the Big East, where the basketball is awesome and the football sucks.)

Whoa. Think we could be seeing something special going down in the West Regional? Murray State's actually come out there and shown what they've got (which was always a distinct possibility; I had a feeling that no matter how much of a Final Four contender the 3-seed in their region may have looked--and Marquette is, if not the best 3-seed, no worse than a very close second to Baylor--that team would also be at risk of missing the Sweet 16, because Murray State can ball with anyone), and there's no longer a 2-seed in their way...

...Nah, still won't happen. Even if Murray State does pull this upset, the Louisville-Michigan State winner will stop them before they can reach the Final Four. Probably. (Come to think of it, if they get by Michigan State in the Sweet 16, wouldn't Louisville be favored in the Elite Eight regardless of who their opponent was?)

Was hoping Baylor would choke so I could laugh at all the tools who took them over Duke.

Indiana vs Baylor totally happening :D

Well, most of the potential threats to that happening were taken out in the round of 64! Though there's still Kentucky.

From: Paratroopa1 | #167
Dude I'm just talking about the sweet 16 anyway. I don't care how good you think UK is, they can't knock Indiana out of the first two rounds when they don't play them! Fact is that nobody is talking about Indiana to even get to Kentucky because everyone's all over Wichita State's nuts, and that didn't seem right.

For the record I have UK winning the whole thing in my bracket. It's chalk, but it just feels right this year.

Ha, you're right about that. I suppose the reason everyone's down on Indiana is because all of their losses came against that overrated conference they play in. Remember: The Big Ten tournament actually was won by the top seed...with seven total losses. (The runner-up, interestingly enough, only reached seven losses after the loss in the conference tourney.)

Big East regular-season champion? Only two losses, though the runner-up there also had 7. Big 12? A 4-loss team, a 6-loss team, and a 7-loss team. ACC had a 5-loss team and a 6-loss team, and although the SEC's runner-up was pretty weak, the (regular season) champion there also had just two losses. How the Big Ten managed to get a team on the top seed line is beyond me.

masterplum posted...
Is it just me, or was NCstate over SDSU the most expected 11-6 upset ever

Nah, this happens every time a bubble team in a power conference goes on an unexpected run in their conference tourney, lands an 11-seed, and faces a 6-seed from a mid-major. Or sometimes even not a mid-major.

Ouch. Bad day for my home state. NIT 1-seed Seton Hall gets upset in round 2 by UMass in the morning, then both Princeton (9-seed) and Rutgers (6-seed) exit the women's tournament in round 1. (While I understand the reasoning behind it--the women's game doesn't draw nearly as many fans as the men's game does, so if one of the host schools is also in the tournament, you put that team at that site--it's always bothered me that lower seeds can end up with home games in the women's tournament. I totally predicted Gonzaga's run to the Elite Eight last year playing nothing but home games, but it still bothers me that Rutgers got victimized by the Spokane subregional this year.)

A run all the way to the Final Four as an 11-seed, followed by a run to (at least) the Sweet 16 as a 12-seed. Go to the Elite Eight or beyond this year and they won't need the third year to lock up their "major team in a mid-major conference" spot (Butler managed this by getting back-to-back National Runner-Up finishes, albeit with better seeds), but VCU is already comparing favorably to the run that put Gonzaga on the map (Elite Eight as a 10-seed in 1999 followed by back-to-back Sweet 16 trips as a 10-seed in 2000 and a 12-seed in 2001).

Damnit, I was so busy looking up ways to compare VCU to other midmajor darlings of recent years that I lost track of the game itself. Had to rewind to actually see how the f*** that happened, and of course, right as I'm hitting the end of that game, I see that whoa, ISU-UK is actually close--tied!--so I go over to there and find that ISU has scored a grand total of two points since then and is trailing by 13.

Goddamnit I hate this tournament.

Ha, yeah...I'm not really sure if I consider my brackets "alive" or not. That VCU-Indiana result actually didn't affect my brackets one bit (I had Wichita State in the Sweet 16)...I'm going to consider my brackets "alive" for now, and worry about the details tomorrow.

*looks at tomorrow's schedule*

Well, that's kind of unhappy. I was hoping that UNC-Creighton would be one of the earlier games. Like I said before, my bracket hinges on the fact that Henson is may not play at all and Zeller is playing hurt. (Well, that and the probably mistaken belief that Creighton is actually good enough to take advantage of UNC being less than 100%, because even 80% of UNC is really damn good.) If that goes against me, I'll be free as well.

Although actually, I'll be free to root for the nearest college (one that I actually do have a somewhat tenuous connection to) tomorrow, because I had neither them nor their next opponent even making it this far. Come on Mountain Hawks! Become the first 15-seed to make the Sweet 16!

Crazy enough when two double-digit seeds meet up in the Sweet 16 (it happened last year!); crazier still when a matchup of double-digit seeds in the Sweet 16 is guaranteed before the matchup itself is set!
