Possibly without spoiling too much. I'm supposed to go with a friend for a midnight showing, but I guess I'm not nerdy enough or something. I haven't read the book and don't know too much of what its about or what to expect, other than EVERYONE seems to know what it is and is looking forward to it.
As far as I know, there's an annual-something contest where 1 male and female from 12 districts are chosen to fight to the death. They are given training and prepared for combat and I think the actual games are broadcast in front of all 12 districts live.

Aecioo posted... Teen novel about a society that every year has The Hunger Games, an event where multiple boy and girl (teenagers) are chosen to fight to the death.
that's the broadest way of explaining it
Good news is that it's reviewing decently, so it could be good.
Hmm, sounds interesting enough. I guess it is sort of like Battle Royale in that "Kids fight to the death" sense, should be interesting.
Also I'm supposed to be posting in that topic more, but busyness keeps being busy. I'm keeping up with them in reading just not writing because I fail.
People have already pretty much given you the premise. I'm reading the books right now and they're pretty good. It's similar to Battle Royale except that it's more of a singular narrative. Don't expect to get to know many of the secondary characters too well. I've read some early reviews and they're all saying the movie is good and that it does a good job of explaining what's going on and setting up the world, so it shouldn't be confusing or anything.

70 odd years before the novels there was an uprising which ultimately failed, and, as part of the punishment for that rebellion, randomly selected children are forced to fight to the death once a year for the capital's entertainment.
Think somewhere between Battle Royale and Circuses in ancient Rome (the apparent inspiration).
