Fusion opens up a possible new chapter for Samus, especially when Metroid Dread was talked about. I believe Dread was always supposed to take place after Fusion.

Rumors abounded since 2005 about the development of a title called Metroid Dread, supposedly a 2D side-scroller for the Nintendo DS. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, there is a message in the Metroid breeding zone of the Space Pirate Homeworld on a computer panel that if scanned says "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion." Developers from Retro Studios gave a full but cryptic denial of any connection with the rumored game, and Nintendo denied they were making another 2D Metroid title.[13][14][15][16] However, at E3 2009, Sakamoto confirmed Metroid Dread existed at one point, and may still be in development,[17][18] though in a later interview Sakamoto stated that Nintendo prefers to keep secrecy on the project, and also that he would like to "reset the situation at once and start from scratch."[19] On the May 3, 2010, 75th episode of IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, editor Craig Harris confirmed that the story for Metroid Dread was fully written and he had seen it at one point in time, claiming "[Nintendo] has it and can bring it back at any time." Metroid 1 is an unplayable wreck.

Just play Zero Mission, it turns the worst game in the franchise into the second best. (behind Super)

The only other game that I might tell you to skip is Hunters. I really loved its multiplayer, but that's gone now so there's no reason to play it. Campaign is pretty terrible, although seeing new bounty hunters is cool (one thing I really liked about Corruption). I really hope we get a new Metroid Prime Hunters, except on an actual console to really flesh out its multiplayer, and also give it an at least decent campaign.

Metroid 1 aged terribly, but the Zero Mission did a wonderful job of bringing it up to date. Metroid Fusion is a departure in gameplay as it is very linear, but still a ton of fun. Very intense game. People exaggerate the text storytelling... for a first playthrough you'll like it a lot.

it's the repeated playthroughs where it really sucks because you can't skip text, and when you know everything you're doing already you often spend more time spamming A to get pass the text than you spend time actually playing the game.

That being said, I can explain a lot of things wrong with MP1, mostly dealing with the level design. MP2 has MUCH better level design, imo. And MP3 gets points for being the only Wii game that doesn't just use motion well, but uses motion to make its controls BETTER than a regular control could.

There's quite a few Wii games that do this. Including the other 2 Primes, in a way!

Hey, no. Metroid is not unplayable. It's perfectly playable. How can you not play it? Unplayable is Big Rigs. That word gets thrown around a lot, but it shouldn't be. Regardless of how much the rest of the series improves on the formula, Metroid doesn't stop being good. It's arcadey fun. Probably the weakest game in the series, but worth a look. It's a NES game, and that's about all that's wrong with it. Still a fun time, worth a look. Very hard. So if you like that sort of thing, go for it.

As someone who has done speedruns of the game (which relatively maximises the time spent on unskippable text, obviously), this isn't anywhere close to true. There's still less text than there is in most post-1993 RPGs.

Granted, that might still be too much for some people. And yes, I'd prefer if you could hit start to skip scenes as well, or something like that. But I'd think for most people it shouldn't significantly impact one's enjoyment of the game.

Reading this thread reminds me I should actually play the 3D Metroids, but I am lazy.

The original Metroid gets way too much hate. It's a cool little game that I think everyone should play keeping in mind that it was made in 1986. The starting-with-30-health thing sucks, but otherwise I think the game is neat. It really doesn't deserve to be s*** on like it is. It's kind of a relic, sure, but it's cool.

I think starting with Zero Mission would be best. Original Metroid hasn't aged well, and ZM has the original Metroid that you can unlock afterwards anyway if you really feel like trying it, then jump into the Prime games. Hunters takes place between Prime 1 and 2 but is...not the greatest for single player, to put it lightly.

The no saving, no map, no diagonal aiming thing sucks pretty hard too

And that most of the hallways look exactly the same.

Metroid 2 for game boy is still pretty good these days but was really unappreciated for releases. Wheras the original Metroid has been released 6 different times now, Metroid 2 went without any rerelease for around 20 years (where it's now on the 3DS).

Super Metroid is the best. Followed by Prime. Those two are honestly some of the most amazing games ever. From there you can't really go too wrong, they're all good. However, here are some controversial opinions I have.

Metroid 2 is stellar. It's honestly not hard to figure out where to go-- there is a huge main shaft, and whenever the lava lowers you go to the next sector which isn't that enormous, check how many Metroids are left, kill them and repeat. It's honestly a pretty straightforward game which gets knocked for all the wrong reasons.

Metroid Zero Mission honestly isn't very good. It tries to turn the original Metroid into Super Metroid, and for the most part it succeeds with the exception of two MAJOR things. Slight MZM spoilers
1- Chozodia is a f***ing wreck. Stealth is fine, whatever, but the level design is absolutely atrocious. Furthermore, the final boss is unanimously regarded as insanely idiotic.
2- Backtracking for power ups. This sounds kinda stupid, but take Super Metroid for example-- you can get every power up in that game along the way. You can pick up everything in a very nice path with nearly no backtracking. In Zero Mission, once in Chozodia and you get your final power up, congrats, instead of picking up the rest of the powerups on the way to the boss you get to backtrack all over Zebes. Furthermore, a more personal complaint of mine which may be controversial, I don't particularly care for pulling off tricky maneuvers to get powerups. I don't want to shinespark here and there and all over the place to get powerups. Reward me for exploring, be clever about the placement, not your technical skills.
End MZM spoilers

Metroid Fusion is more of a survival horror game. It's great. It has some of the problems with MZM such as being unable to collect all the powerups in one fell swoop without running all over the place when you could just finish the game as well as powerups which require tricky maneuvers, but the game never set out to be Super Metroid. It feels entirely different and is it's own beast. Like I said before, it's essentially a 2d survival horror game with a Metroid coat over it.

I wouldn't call metroid II 'stellar', but it is a much better game than people usually give it credit for. I'd love to see it remade someday, could be better than zero mission

I would also rank fusion above zero mission, same reason for fusion, survival horror elements are great, SA-X made me **** my pants worse than silent hill ever did.. I don't even think zero mission succeeds at "being super metroid" in the slightest, the physics are too tight and rigid in addition to what you said

Don't play Other M unless you hate yourself.

As for the rest.

MP3 would probably be my favorite Prime game if not for the fact that the MPT now let's me play all the games with Wiimote. So MP1 instantly shoots up to #1, MP3 a close second and MP2 a pretty distant third.

Super Metroid is a classic. Pretty much the gold standard for "Metroidvania" games (suck it, SotN). You can't go wrong with this game.

Zero Mission is definitely a necessary update for Metroid. The first one isn't terrible, but it's missing so much stuff that makes Metroid good that I can't help but not recommend it.

I've never played Metroid II, actually, even though I have it on my 3DS.

Fusion gets some hate for tampering with the Metroid formula, but it's still got enough going for it to recommend it. There's some great tense moments (won't spoil what's going on).

Hunters gets a bit of a bad rap. The controls actually work pretty decently, it's just not very fleshed out since it's more about the MP than the SP.

This has never and will never make any sense to me. There really wasn't a Metroid formula to tamper with. Metroid 1 you could literally go anywhere at any time and wasn't reliant on the 'get upgrade, access new area' formula of Super Metroid. Likewise, Metroid 2 is obviously way different than Metroid and Super Metroid. Super Metroid is, well, Super Metroid. So to say Metroid Fusion tampered with the Metroid formula which at this point isn't existent beyond one game in the series is just... dumb.
