I don't mean damaged in shipping, but if the product was in eggshell casing that had to be torn up to remove the item before finding out it was defective.

If it's defective they should.

Though you might have to pay some sort of fee. I don't know. In general just go through the online form for returning, if it warns you about a fee for opening the package and you find it worth contesting call their customer support and explain/complain aggressively enough to where they might give you a full return.
