Oh it doesn't necessitate it, just that it might be one of the reasons why people talk about GW2 in D3 threads.

I really can't see another reason, the gameplay of GW2 isn't the same as D3, like at all.

Maybe it's just because GW2's beta is in 1 week.

You can still increase the stats through items and gems and the like.

Think of it like critical strike in most games. You never really have control over the amount you get, but you can control how much MORE you get. Honestly, I like the thought of not having to worry about balancing things/destroying a character with bad stat placement and instead letting my choice of items do the work.

There were like 5 'good' builds in D2 (less than the number of characters) so as long as it's more than that, it's an improvement

Eh, not really. Pretty much every character in D2 had the same cookie cutter stat placement that if you didn't follow, you were basically wasting points. Blizzard does the same thing in WoW and it works well. You don't have to place stats in that game, and instead you just focus on collecting items to increase them. The skills and the ways you tweak them are the real character customization.

Also, there's an increased emphasis on item customization in D3, so it actually opens up more options and makes stat placement interesting instead of stressful.

Yeah, WoW stole a lot of the stuff that worked from Diablo 2, and now Diablo 3 is stealing a lot of the stuff that works in WoW. It's kind of nice.

downloaded yesterday, played for an hour or two, but now I have to go out for the better part of today. I'll probably be home in the evening. I dunno how the battle.net hooking up works yet, but I'm azuarc#1117.

Just finished my first run through of the Beta, 2 minutes before the server closed! Played as a monk, had a pretty good time. Playing with others is more enjoyable than soloing.

I've played demon hunter, witch doctor and wizard so far. They did a great job with the classes in the early going, I think. I haven't really had much experience with the monk, though. I love the Witch Doctor the most. My mobo's PCI bus is hosed so I have to use my onboard graphics until I order something new, but I didn't really have any issues with a geforce 9300 integrated pos. I have settings on low, but yeah, great job by Blizzard getting this supported by crappy video cards

Yup, stats are pointless once you have optimization, because everyone just has the same stats. 95% of people with the same half-dozen builds, 5% are newbs, and then there's a dozen people with melee sorcs that can't get past Act 2 NM. Putting it on gear gives customization options, same as all the skill configurations you can use. So far I already play my WD different in solo than in a group, including weapons in hand.

Beat Leoric, was pretty fun. Actually died once to him because I wasn't paying attention and he did his special like twice a in a row while I stood there like a moron. The second time I knew to dodge but he actually only did his special like 3-4 times and just summoned skeletons the whole time.

Leoric sent my zombie dogs down with one swipe to start the battle, and I had just summoned them so they were on cooldown. That was a bit nasty but I didn't really take much damage otherwise. I was a bit dismayed that my summons went down so easily to a mini-boss, like in Diablo 2 the act bosses disintegrated Necro summons almost immediately, and if the equivalent of Blood Raven can send them packing so easily... yikes.
