****ing brilliant episode. Best one in the series so far. Just about every moment oozed excellence, even the more mundane ones from Stannis's troops puking in the ship to Sansa immediately picking up the doll Ned gave her last season as well as Cersei's tale to Tommen. The scenes leading up to the battle was filled with this impending sense of doom and anxiety while the battle was just so epic with danger around every corner. (Seriously, Stannis was "that" close to having his head squashed in) The effects for the wildfire scene were awesome, so great use of the budget right there. Dialogue was excellent too from the exchange between Sandor and Bronn (love how Bronn happened to be the one to save the Hound) to Sansa comforting the noble ladies (and snarking at Joffrey as well). Just a few more thoughts:

-Tyrion rallying the troops was one of the highlights of the episode. The return of "HALFMAN! HALFMAN!" had me geeking out. Peter Dinklage really nailed it with his delivery of Tyrion's speech.

-I really loved Joffrey's diminishing sense of confidence. Throughout the season he's been an arrogant little scumbag who thought he could solve all his problems with violence and even hoped to end Stannis himself. But his youthful bravado soon turns into a moment of fear and insecurity as he realizes the invasion by Stannis is just so much bigger and more troublesome than he thought. It's just so palpable and a testament to Gleeson's acting.

-The scenes with the Hound. As I've said, Bronn killing Sandor's would-be killer is just so wonderful. We've seen that this killing machine is very vulnerable. I love his final line to Tyrion and Joffrey. You've got cajones to defy Joffrey like that, Sandor. And of course, his conversation with Sansa is yet another high point. Sansa telling the Hound that he doesn't frighten her is just heartwarming.

-The entire ending with the slow motion back-and-forth between the battle's denouement and Cersei's story. I love Stannis's anguished cries of defeat, Renly's armor, Tywin marching up to the Iron Throne, Cersei's relief, all topped to National's rendition of The Rains of Castamere.

All in all, brilliant decision to let Martin write the episode. It's just LEAGUES ahead of any other episode, even Baelor. I have to let out all this adrenaline. Sorry if I don't sound coherent. The episode is THAT excellent.

Oh, and drunken Cersei was great.

I saw that episode would be really good.

I was AMAZED at how good it was.

HOLY. ****ING. ****.

I'm going to beat realo to it and say that the acting MVPs this episode go to Sansa and Cersei. Both were ridiculously excellent.

Holllllly s***

Why did Ser Meryn (or was it Boros?) attack Tyrion? Did I miss something?

Wasn't expecting to see Loras there; guess his number one priority is avenging Renly, regardless of who he has to help. With Tywin in King's Landing as well, this seems like a prime opportunity for Robb to strike.

The Hound scenes were excellent. We've seen his character slowly reveal itself over the course of the past two seasons; apparently being asked to walk through the fire (so to speak) is what finally causes him to cease putting up with Joffrey's s*** and do what he must.

Also that Rains of Castamere... haunting, especially at the end.

I'm not sure. I think it was the same guy Joffrey told to stay with Tyrion and fight as the king. Tyrion said his name but I missed it.

However,

It should have been Mandon Moore but I don't think they've established him in the TV show so they probably used one of other guys.

I have no words. Holy ****.

I am struggling to find a single weak point in this episode. Incredible. Definitely edges out Baelor for best episode of the series. I just cannot believe that what I just saw was TV.

Also:
--> The knight who struck Tyrion was ser Mandon Moore, a member of the Kingsguard. I don't think he's been mentioned yet in the series - in order to avoid potential future spoilers, I'm going to cut it there, however. You'll have to figure out the rest on your own.

--> Spoiler-free background on the Rains of Castamere (which I've hid in case people don't like background info on events that transpired before the beginning of the series): when Tywin Lannister was a teenager, two rivals houses decided to rebel against House Lannister, led at the time by Tytos Lannister, Tywin's father. These two houses were respectively House Tarbeck of Tarbeck Hall and House Reyne of Castamere. Tywin - still a teenager - led a retaliatory attack against both houses. Not only did he win, he also exterminated the whole Reyne/Tarbeck families. To a man. House Tarbeck and House Reyne were completely extinguished. A few years later, when another lord grew truculent with House Lannister, Tywin did not send him a message, but a minstrel, who sang 'The Rains of Castamere' to him. The lord did not grow truculent ever again. Basically, it's the "Don't **** with Tywin Lannister" (or with House Lannister) theme song. Aside from that, I would strongly, strongly advise against googling the song. Or even glancing at a single Youtube comment. This thing is a minefield for spoilers.

--> Lena Headey was fantastic. Jack Gleeson was wonderful (that look of his when he decides to retreat to the Red Keep - fully aware that he's a coward and ashamed of it... brilliant!). Sophie Turner definitely raised her game for the second season - a pity for her that she plays a relatively unlikeable character, bc she's doing a good job with the role! Dinklage was, as usual, exceedingly good - and I really like Dillane and Cunningham's take on their respective characters. Hell, even Shae managed to impress me this ep (which is a first, I believe)! It was just fantastic!

--> We now know where Tyrion inherited his swagger. The way Tywin just strolled in the throne room was glorious!

Today on Facebook we held a game of thrones discussion like we do before all episodes. I said that this would Be the best episode of the series because HBO's penultimates are usually escalating.

It was everything I wanted and more. The use of Cersei to cut between battles was amazing; those scenes were more tense than what was going on outside. Cersei and Sansa nearly stole the show. I say nearly because Joffrey tried to steal it first with his arrogance to cowardice routine. Alas it was not his to steal either. Tyrion inched ahead of him with another great Varys interaction, and a legendary speech that had me cheering HALF MAN. I usually find people's love for Tyrion over rated but tonight he earned his soon to be Oscar for leading actor. But not even Tyrion could steal the show from...

And this feels so weird to say...

The mutha F'ING Hound. He's done the we're all killers bit before but never with this much passion and gusto. His scene with Bronn was just magnificent as was his reaction to Bronn saving his life. That moment where he realized none of it was worth it was just huge. The look on his face as he stared through the fire...powerful. He's also giving us the best kills since Drogo left. He cut people in half. IN HALF. His telling off of Joffrey and Tyrion was so long in the making.

And then, finally, the scene with Sansa. Ever since she got there the Hound has always looked out for her in his own way. You can tell they both hate Joffrey but are either to afraid or honorable to do anything. I watched that scene like 5 times and every single one was magnificent. How far Sansa has come and how great the Hound is.

The ramifications are what make me the most excited. Joffrey's men saw him leave. They saw Tyrion stay. The Hound is now a wanted man and he and Sansa are the opposite of Jaime and the Amazon.

Sansa has joined the rest of the Starks being MIA. That family just has the craziest luck. Also, Robb Stark is free to move on Kings Landing and everyone is there. This is just such a good show. They never let me down. I really thought Stannis would win because game of thrones has taught me to never assume.

They didn't so much rebel as they kept borrowing gold and refused to pay Tytos back and when Tytos went to Castamere to offer them one of his children (maybe Tywin specifically)'s hands in matrimony they laughed in their faces and refused. Then Tytos died and Tywin made an example of them so no one would think to laugh at the Lannisters anymore.

Cersei's scenes were scarier and more tense than the actual fight. I didn't know WHO she was going to poison.

I swear to God Game of Thrones is becoming the medieval version of the Wire; not in its social commentary towards the heart of America's city but in the way every single character can step up and carry an episode.

The Hound came from nowhere and carried the biggest episode of the series. Like...that would be like Todd carrying My Winter on Scrubs or something.

I've always been a big fan of the women in this series.

The only time a woman hasn't been on top of the character rankings was when Khal Drogo was terrorizing humanity with threats of rape and torture and horse gods.

Season 2 Rankings:

Arya Stark-God Mode. She's challenging Sally Draper for best kid on television ever.

Cersei-Her character is so ENTERTAINING. She's so many things all at once: Man of the House, Scorned Wife, Vengeful child, Dedicated mother...you never know which Cersei is coming out.

Tyrion Lannister-They should just go ahead and hand him the Best Actor Trophy right now. Back to Back Tyrion blows us out of the water with his transition from carefree outcast to honorable leader has been the 2nd best transition this show has done(Dany to Khaleesi #1)
