That despite all sharing X and Y as buttons, the Gamecube controller is the only one to actually have a Z button?

I never had a problem pressing X on any controller. I guess that comes with being a lifelong gamer. Though if there is anyone to blame for confusion, it's MS for doing that diagonal flip of SNES buttons for Xbox.

I do still occasionally get tripped up by the SNES-360 flip. I get more confused on the DS than I do on the SNES, though, for some reason, even though they have the same layout. I forget where Y is a lot.

I can sometimes have a problem when first learning a game if it says "Press the X Button to do [thing]." I don't really remember the buttons by letter. I mostly remember them by function. So I'll sometimes forget where X is on that particular controller.

See, with most modern games I don't remember stuff by button, I remember it by on-screen feedback.

I couldn't tell you what button does what just based on description. If someone asked me "What face button brings up the menu in LittleBigPlanet?" I wouldn't have any idea. But if I picked up the controller, I'd open it right up.

"press X" makes me think "press the bottom button"

if i'm on any other controller than the dualshock, i have to look at the controller to see what's what

This happens to me a lot too when I'm introducing a friend to a game. "What button does [thing]?" "Uh... give me the controller." "Just tell me which button." "I don't remember; I have to see the controller."

For most controllers I just think of the button positions. So X is on the bottom for PS style, and on the top for SNES style. But for Xbox only I mainly use the colors over the letters.

Also, looking at my DC right now I remembered that the Xbox basically copied the DC controller so Sega is the one to blame.

Man, if you look at the colors for Xbox, DC, and SNES, they're all completely different and random...
