An organization picked the Hyatt Regency for a regional conference. I'd like to go, but even if I took their early bird package, the hotel would cost me $200 a night. Can I do much better than that in downtown Chicago? $200 right now is a little over 2 days pay for me, and it really doesn't seem worth it. I don't need a river view, I just want to be near enough to the conference where I won't get mugged on my way there.

Chicago isn't as dangerous as country folk make it seem.

I've lived on the north and south side of Chicago; really any hotel on the north side is incredibly safe and the public transportation here is top notch. There are some areas you definitely want to avoid, but they don't have large hotels located in those parts of the city anyway. You'll be fine.

ya ive always felt pretty safe in chicago. same really for all the cities in that area (detroit, etc). just dont do anything stupid and you wont run into trouble, so its not something you need to worry about when picking out a hotel there

Just got back from Chicago recently. Apparently there are homeless people who are spraying people with water guns. That's literally the biggest danger.

If you want "near the conference" you might be outta luck. There's the crown plaza that's in the same clump (at least, if we're thinking of the same con center and hyatt- the Hyatt is right across the street and has a skybridge) that I think is a bit cheaper but not as nice.

There are other hotels a bit farther out for sure, but I only know the ones in walking distance of the Donald E. Stephenson.

For a conference I attended at the Palmer House in Chicago, I stayed at the Central Loop hotel. Great hotel, and I got a great bargain on it at Hotels.com ($110 a night, if not less, I think).

As long as you've got some time to plan, you can easily find notably less than $200/night.
