Case in point: I got the itch to play San Andreas. I couldn't find my disc, so I bought it on XBox Arcade. That's 2.87 GB. I have a very slow connection (low-end DSL). I went to sleep with it downloading. I left for work, and left it downloading. Sometime during the day, I became disconnected; I was at 75 percent.
And this is a last-generation title. Major releases this gen are even bigger. I can't imagine them shrinking next generation.
Until home service gets cheaper, there's still very much a market for disc-based software.
I could make a cup of coffee and have San Andreas ready for me on Steam.

San Andreas, what a great game. Though I had to re-buy the game (I don't remember from where, probably Play-N-Trade) and I got a black label case, with a greatest hits game. I don't know how I didn't notice this beforehand.

You can resume downloads on a PS3. I'm pretty surprised to hear that's not the same on the 360.
And you don't have low-end DSL, so that's irrelevant.
It's not irrelevant; it's equally anecdotal as the original point. A large number of people don't have to wait 8-10 hours for a 2 GB download, but, yes, some do. If you want better download speeds, get better internet. If that's not available to you, get a disk. No one has to worry about a digital-only home console because that's not happening any time soon.

To be fair, he did specifically say "download-only".

You definitely should have upgraded your connection by now to at least cable (unless you live somewhere where you can't), but I still agree partially, most should be download only though. For really big (I'd say we're at least talking around full blu ray disc single layer size, 25GB) or really popular downloads it could be faster to get the disc in some way, or for some reason you could be using up most of your bandwidth at the time and need to speed it up by getting the disc because of that. This is all still assuming that the console maker hosts all the downloads and has good servers too. There's also the fact that with really important games, if the disc is only a little more, you may want the extra back up option.
The world as it is is not ready now, but assuming progress is made with connection speeds, it will happen in the near future. Give it a generation of consoles or two.

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
I'm still stuck on dialup at home, so if the next gen requires constant internet connection, I can't buy the system. It's not available in my location and I live on a highway two minutes outside the most populated town in the parish, by the way. >_>

and no. the world ISN'T ready for this and won't be ready for a long, long time. games themselves are getting bigger by a ridiculous amount - if Payne 3 is a sign of things to come we're looking at uncompressed 1080p - and then eventually MORE on the PC side - videos. within 3 years we're going to find games that ask for 50GB.
and even on cable, that's a long, long download.
