Romney, the son of then-Michigan governor George Romney, had it out for a younger boy because of his long bleached-blond hair.

No, it's more about the character of the guy.

I'd have a hard time voting for Obama if the same thing was true of him.

The entire goal of a politician is to present themselves as being a perfect human who has never committed any wrong in his/her life and is capable of making the best possible decisions in any given situation. Of course this will hurt him, I don't think it'll do much, but his whole career is focused on trying to convince us that he's a great person who knows what is best for the country, and now we find out he was an ******* in high school.

Honestly speaking, I couldn't give a **** less if Anthony Weiner wanted to send girls dick pics, but apparently that makes him unfit to be a member of congress. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple people read this and now think Romney is unfit to be President.

this might actually HELP romney with some people in this ****ing country tbqh

but where it will hurt is with gay donors and the youth vote. with obama coming out for gay marriage and romney against it in addition to this kind of news story about him, obama pretty much gets all gay support. and with how prevalent the issue of gay bullying is to youth now, lots of young people are going to think twice about wanting to support not only romney but republicans in general if they are labelled as the party of those who behave like this.

Not really. There really are areas of more significance than this like, as someone said, how he's bullying gays NOW. The people who would be offended by this already don't like Romney. I don't think any true liberal doubted that he was a bully in middle school or high school and I don't think any true conservative really cares.

This is just like when that Obama joint picture came out. Conservatives were all like "OH MY GOD CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS" and liberals were all like "uhh, yeah".

I have absolutely no love for the Republican party and especially not Romney, but can we really judge a a guy in his 60s based on how he was when he was a teenager? I'm 24 and I'm pretty dissimilar to my 17 year old self. Most people's brain isn't done fully developing personality until they're in their mid 20s.

There's plenty of reason to judge someones past if the other side is so adamant that it matters. Otherwise it only matters when it suits their interests.

Conservatives often like to bring up Obama's distant past, like how he ate a dog once because that was normal food where he lived at the time, or how he went to school in Indonesia which is *gasp* an Islamic nation.

I'm quite far left (left wing by Canadian standards) and I'm actively surprised. Romney struck me as nerdy and a little out-of-touch (at least with people who make less than a million a year). I would've expected him to make a clueless statement like "Well if the homeless can't afford a house, why don't they buy a yacht? Or get a job?" I did not expect physical assault.

Errr...yeah, it is dumb that Republicans brought up things Obama did when he was in his teens.

That doesn't mean that this also isn't dumb. Yeah, this makes young Romney sound like a bit of a jerk, but who didn't do something unnecessarily jerky when they were in their teens?

Plus, the kid wasn't out of the closet at the time of the incident. Romney just didn't like his face.

You're right, good politics would be to let one side dominate the dirty tactics with ridiculous accusations that don't make sense while ignoring valid opportunities to use similar tactics and expose them as hypocrites, because it's the right thing to do.

Depends on how intelligent your voterbase is. In Canada, if you run a campaign based on personal attacks, you will have a number of people voting against you because they feel like you're dodging the real issues and don't have substantiative things to say about policies.

Look, if you feel comfortable ascribing motives to individuals based on absolutely nothing, then be my guest. I'm not saying this never happens, but, at least in the story, there is nothing to indicate this is the case yet. The dudes that are ratting him out specifically say he did it because he didn't like the kid's hair. What reason would they have for:

1) Bringing up the fact that Romney assaulted someone in high school
2) Protecting Romney by not mentioning the fact that it was also basically a hate crime

Like I said, this definitely wasn't a good thing to do and, yes, gay kids are unfairly bullied in high school even if they aren't officially out yet. I tend to not ascribe awful motives to people unless presented with substantial evidence to do so, but maybe I'm crazy.

i was saying that YOU were saying that romney clearly didn't know he was gay and just "didn't like his face", when it is entirely possible that romney did know he was gay because a lot of the time that is pretty obvious. there may be no reason to believe that, but there is no reason to discount it either, especially given that romney has bigoted stances on gay issues.

Romney's been back and forth on gay issues depending on what was politically convenient for him. As governor of Massachusetts, for instance, he made some pro-gay statements.

I believe Romney's current anti-gay stances only slightly more than I believed Obama's anti gay marriage stances in 2008.

I believe it much more. Romney is the type who will say whatever will get him elected, and I attribute his pro-gay statements in Massachusetts were the result of this. Nobody would actually say the things he is saying if they believed in gay marriage, at best he does not care either way. Obama is the type that probably believed in gay marriage but felt that it was not politically viable as a position at the time. Even when he said he was against it, his statements were vague and hinted as possible future change, rather than Romney spouting the same old anti-gay rhetoric. There is no wink and a hint with him.
