Macuilxochitl.
Automatic Action.

-I consider it an accomplishment that I can type out that title without double-checking my spelling now.
-Rooftop Run's opening bars make me think of a more upbeat version of Cee-Lo Green's "F*** You". This track appeals to some part of me-- it feels sort of hyperactive, and given that it's a Sonic track that means it's surely succeeded on some level. There are parts where I rather like the arrangement. Typically those parts are sections not too heavily plagued by that infernal drumming-- it's the one aspect of this track that really annoys me.
- I enjoy Macuilxochitl a lot, even if it feels like I'm hurtling through some sort of jazz piano kaleidoscope. The part that really gets me, though, is where the track finally settles on a focal melody at 1:14. I love that part.
-Automatic Action (or whatever it's called) is pretty cool, but I feel like none of the various elements of this track really step forward and take charge of it. Of Dave Wise's stuff, I find that I like most the ones with a prevalent melody-- like Stickerbrush-- and Fear Factory never had much of that. This arrangement does justice to the original (in fact I like it more), but has even less of a semblance of melodic progression.
-In stark contrast, Shop Music has layers upon layers that all seem to be competing for the limelight. In this case I feel like they unfortunately get in the way of each other. I don't have time to appreciate whatever the acoustic guitar part has to offer, because it's competing with the pluck synth and then is quickly dropped for another synth section. Even when it gets that one part at around 1:35 for itself, that other synth feels a touch too loud. Everything seems to blur a bit together at points.
-As if the difference between the two wanted to be even more pronounced-- Automatic Action starts a bit abruptly, while Shop Music cuts off abruptly at the end.
