activision is still ****ier than both of them, but EA is working hard to reclaim it's throne

Rented servers are one of the best options for online games. I do think that EA is renting them for double what they should, but as long as people rent servers, EA won't shut them off.

Besides, PC games have been like this forever.

Them going with rented servers isn't the problem, though. It's that they're quietly getting rid of free servers which is kind of iffy.

External data centers should be providing custom servers, not the publishers. Competing data centers can set prices and thus aren't a monopoly on servers for the game, and they are also spread out over the country so that the entire game isn't based out of a few centers that, if they go down, don't completely take out online play. Some teams even own data centers to use for game servers, but they're going to find themselves less able to make use of them as time goes on.

I guess it's okay, though. We wouldn't want things like modding in this age of locking everything away and paying money for easy access.
