whats up dude? i feel like me and you are kinda in similar positions in life...two dudes living like a young male should and even though we are just beginning we have already tasted success in numerous areas. i just wanted to make this topic to see how you've been doing and what your plans our for the near and far future bro!
i just graduated with my MS in criminal justice (but i gotta take one summer class to "officially" graduate tho). ive gotten a few offers as a crime analyst so far but im not sure if i want to take them as one is super far away (OKC) and the other is just a dirty place (dc) so im hoping to get some other options. got a couple interviews next week for some closer and better places so hopefully one will pan out. the masters and my previous work experience will get me at least GS11 for any sort of federal analyst job and local work will still probably start me out at 60k.
hows the apartment/work been going? give me an update man!

Next week is my last week at my current agency. As you know, I recently got an absurd promotion/raise (we're talking like 50% here) at arguably the most prestigious advertising agency in the world (not naming names because people like cyclo and warning_crazy have actually attempted to find out my name and employer so they could get me fired).
I think I'll save up some money there for awhile as I consider other career options. I never really wanted to do one thing my entire life unless I truly loved it, and advertising just isn't it for me. But it pays well, so I need some of this for a bit until I move on to a more fulfilling venture. (Though it does feel great knowing that I am successful at a job that most b8ers would KILL for, without actually being that passionate about my work.)
Other than that I am pretty upset about the Knicks, and all this Steve Nash talk is making my blood boil.

Also this is f***ing killer if the salary is the same throughout the country. 60k probably buys you a mansion in a place like OKC. I think that's what they pay Kevin Durant.

thats....really disturbing. its strange that WC would try and tug on supermans cape like that because he should be aware that a person like you could make him unelectable anytime you wanted (not that he is actually electable or anything). still though thats just embarrassing to hear even for a guy like w_c, i always thought board 8 was slightly better than that

ha I feel you. even if its not doing something you love, at least your getting more money to go do the things you love with more $$$. win win either way.

im excited about next season man. we figured out what NOT to do with those two bad stretches, and next year I know that we will be one of the best teams in the conferences. just hoping our guys who are injured can have healthy recoveries, although im pretty sure baron is done

Any advice on how to break into advertising? I dont mind tax accounting, but I would also like to try new things in life. I'm a good writer, can speak well, and look good in a suit but thats about all the ad experience I have (ie no experience).
I object to the characterization of all of DC as a dirty place. If you're making anywhere above 50k you can easily get a nice place in Georgetown or the Upper Northwest and never have to travel to the admittedly dirty southeast end of town.

Find/hire a graphic designer, and start building a mock portfolio. Basically, take several real brands/companies that need a new campaign, come up with various concepts with headlines (the most important thing for a writer), work with the designer to execute them, type up a little blurb about the problem/strategic approach/tactical execution, and then put it into a nice portfolio.
Then you need to send that out to every hiring manager/recruiter you can find, and hope they like it. If it's really good, they might start you as an entry-level copywriter somewhere. If it's good enough and they see potential, you might find a position as an intern/admin for the creative department. Either way, you'll make no money at first, but if you excel you will quickly be earning a great salary.
Also, you must live in New York or you won't find a job.

When I was working for a congressional campaign you and w_c literally were attempting to figure out who the candidate was so you could email them quotes from this board that I've said over the years.
I don't know how serious you were about it, but I remember perfectly w_c compiling a list of 3-5 candidates he'd narrowed down (and my guy was actually one of them, too).

XMFD!!!
Reminds me of this idiot I went to college with, who literally unseated a completely competent county treasurer of 20 years as a college junior because she ran as a Democrat in 2008 in NH.
But then again I went to an elite school and not South Philly Community College.

Oh my god that sounds incredible
Glad you are okay and even more glad that you were man enough to pull that kind of s*** off. Why don't you own a real gun?

From: Mershaaay | #008 I think I'll save up some money there for awhile as I consider other career options.
Do you have a specific dream job in mind?
also to both of you/anyone else interested in music - what's been your favorite stuff so far this year? I think burial's ep is the best thing to come out in two years. i also like the offerings from cloud nothings, schoolboy q and sleigh bells, and i've been really digging asap rocky and kendrick lamar from last year.
as for me - freshman in college, finals, etc. should have gotten straight a's this semester, but since i kind of suck at time management i'll end it with a few b's. i'd be willing to just say "freshman year, doesn't matter" but I don't want to get lazy next year - I have a more demanding schedule last year.
congrats on graduating sess! i think your train of thinking makes sense, I wouldn't want to live in OKC or DC either
@walrus - my favorite new tracks this year are the i dont like remix and the price is right by trick trick. favorite releases would prolly be jadakiss - consignment, the big krit mixtape, game - california republic, meek mill - dreamchasers 2. no actual albums that ive been impressed by so far, but theyre coming later in the year for sure. and i would love to live in OKC, its just that i dont want to move that far out from my family and friends just yet. but it would rule to be in a city w/ a cool sports team like the thunder
@bartz - yeah its not a fun place to be around. there are places with much higher crime/murder rates that ive been to that werent bad at all just because you could tell the crime was kept for the most part "in house" if you get me...like unless you messed with them they werent going to mess with you. dc i always feel like im a target for something constantly tho

yeah i've been meaning to get on chief keef's mixtape - i'm from chicago - and the kanye remix but i haven't heard either. i've been pretty much exclusively listening to the beastie boys since MCA passed.
never realized krit put out another mixtape! his style isn't my favorite but I should check it out nonetheless.
I know very little about OKC as a city - my perception of the thunder is a little altered because I was disappointed the sonics were leaving seattle in the first place. woulda loved to see this fantastic thunder team in seattle. where are your roots?
i was born in carolina but moved all over the place due to my dads work (new york, atlanta, back to carolina) but weve settled in virginia now. and i agree with you that i would love to have seen a championship sonics team, but i still like the thunder somewhat and from watching their games you can tell its an awesome fan environment

Possibly something involving government/policy or nonprofit work. I just want to not worry about money for some time so I can clear my head.

Haven't listened to a whole lot, but I agree that Kindred is freaking incredible. Loner may be his best track ever.

just started my last classes. professor gave me a pretty huge assignment due thursday (30 pages w/ presentation) which is owning my life at the moment but i plan on making it my b****. i've had her for numerous classes and she tends to give me separate work that the rest of the class doesnt get since the normal work is kinda cake for me and she knows it. its an awesome feeling to be recognized like that but damn does it consume a s***load of time
