As for Starcraft.. well I've never liked RTS games
and I saw a friend play Diablo II back in the days and it looked pretty boring

Diablo is pretty boring, though I'm playing it with my friends anyway.

Starcraft belongs on any list of the best games ever made, and everyone who calls themselves a gamer should at least play through the single player of it, even if they don't like the competitive scene. Starcraft 2 is awesome too, but it lacks the atmosphere and charm of the first one.

That said, I still ever so slightly prefer Civilization to Starcraft, I think. It's very close though and really, if you haven't played both you're missing out.

there is no denying they are quality games but...they are not mandatory overall.

well, maaaaaybe diablo if only for some of the quotes. same for starcraft i guess >_>;;

the actual gameplay...eh...i never was a hugs fan of rts, so never got into starcraft's gameplay despite it being awesome. diablo is a bit dated now and if you want an example of its gameplay evolved some, look up torchlight.

good games, but i would put civ 2 above them.

I've been saving up for Diablo III so I neglected to buy Diablo II with its extension and guide but thanks to my money handling skills I don't have enough. I won't buy a Starcraft game though.

path of exile will be a free to play game with a diablo 2 graphical/gameplay style. also has a sphere grid ala ffx. it, torchlight 2, and diablo 3 will be the main games of this style coming out this year.
