. Offline Single Player. Why did they remove it? "Wah wah DRM."
Lets be clear. Blizzard wanted to prevent a very small minority of people from playing their game illegally, so they've implemented a system to control it that inconveniences everyone else. And now it is blowing up in their face.
Suggestion: Players demand offline play. or Blizzard starts handing out refunds / partial refunds/ something (You can't just sell people a game that currently isn't playable). If some no name off brand company had this problem it isn't a big deal but they're Blizzard. Their motto about releases is "It will come out WHEN IT'S READY." Clearly the game is not ready.
What they need to do is spend some of their ****ing cash they made off of WoW on some servers. Activision Blizzard is the biggest video game company in the world. There is no excuse for any server issues like this.

They'll get it working consistently in like a month, and then people will forget about the horrible launch, and they'll implement online single-player for all of their future games, and people will defend it.

Like Blizzard even knows what single player is anymore. Took one hell of a push to even get "offline mode" for Starcraft 2, and that has a bunch of stuff disabled.

All I know is the game that I've been waiting 12 years to play is finally here, and I'm stuck with my thumb up my butt because of server problems. I only ever wanted to play single player -- that's all I ever did with D2! (Well, ok, I did a few IP connects, but those were directly to my friends.)
A game as popular as Diablo III is going to have these problems. It is so easy to be a prisoner of the moment on launch day and be "oh look at this my entertainment has been ruined!" Then just imagine D3's launch day was May 17th or 18th and go play something else for a couple of days. Game has been fun as hell so far and I understand why they made it online only, as a person who recalls hearing a lot about Diablo 2 being pirated.
But yeah if the only issue is the server problems that is going to be fixed soon, and I am curious to hear the sales numbers on Diablo because I bet it outsold Blizzard's expectations.
Note: The game seems ready to me, it is just their servers got completely overwhelmed. High amounts of polish on everything for me so far. .. When I can log in <_<.

To be fair, it isn't entirely for piracy that they made it online only, it is also so people can't cheat to get items to sell in the real money auction house. However, I feel there is a better way to go about preventing that, just make anything collected offline ineligible for sale on the RMAH, they already made it so you can't use the stuff from the RMAH on hardcore characters, so it's not like they couldn't do it.
edit: And to go off what Chris said, this game has been incredibly fun when I have been able to play it.

That has nothing to do with it. RMAH obviously wouldn't work with single player or IP games (or open-bnet if they actually brought that back).
An easy solution would have been to make it so that on launch single player was available offline. If they were worried about it being pirated, implement online only in a future patch and make it clear on launch that this would eventually happen. Piraters could get a "free trial" for a couple weeks to a month, you'd keep your customer base a lot more happy because it gives them a way to play in case things go awry as they have.
I'd call that core functionality <_<. That's not even mentioning that SC2 login (and I presume WoW) was broken this morning because of D3. That's day -50 functionality.
The only reason I played Diablo 2 online was because I wanted access to all runewords and sets, I hate playing these kind of games with other people because when in a group I can't play the way I want to.

Shrug, I've been playing Blizzard games for years. Their day ones are usually rough. No surprises here for me, because day 1 of 1000 makes it a drop in the bucket. I am not happy or anything, but it isn't the end of the world.

I did. Walked the dog, got a check, cashed in a bunch of em, good times. Game went up, but I decided to nap a bit because Ive been up since 5pm yesterday. Come back, certain stupidity here, and the game is down.
