Pooh is well-liked, though. The trade format right now is letting me get a lot of saves for him, but it's also preventing Poke and Doc from saving him because they have to trade for Belle. Without trading the number of saves required would be a lot lower, and he'd be getting 5 saves a round.

I'm mainly referring to Tod. He has no business still being in this contest, and that's coming from someone who doesn't even particularly mind him.

I'm gonna guess the two percent is happening if it isn't up by 8 o' clock.

Brett wouldn't be mean enough to post a minimum four hour round after 8 pm EST... would he?

darkx,

Do I need to remind you why save trading actually saves contests? Sure, characters you don't like can benefit. But you can combat it by trading yourself. Now, if this was banned... do you really think alliances would stop? Because I sure don't, and I would prefer trading be allowed else you will get even worse results because people here with lots of friends will then dominate the contest by trading off board in the PM system or AIM.

Dug is the second-best character from the best Pixar movie, and possibly a top 10 Pixar character overall. Maybe top 10 SMDC is a little bit out there for him, but he's an excellent character that deserves to go pretty far every time. Tod is an average character from an average movie.

So, last call for joint watching. Once I'm sure this isn't going to start tonight (or when it does start) I'll begin watching a movie (Black Cauldron, Sword in the Stone, Emperor's New Groove). If anyone wants to watch either of those, I'll watch that one first. Otherwise I'm grabbing a random one and diving in!

Agree with the first, strongly disagree with the second. Up got terribad toward the end after a strong beginning. TS3 is the best- objectively. If you don't count sequels for some reason I'd say with TS or WALL-E (as overrated as it is) both have Up beat.

Yeah, I'm okay with the save trading for that reason. Otherwise I wouldn't be too much in favor of it.

But to be honest, I've always felt averse to how it forces my hand into doing it if I want any hope for my characters to doing well. It also makes the contest in general eat up significantly more time than it otherwise would because of the time spent proposing and waiting on trades. I highly doubt that I'm going to be able to put that much effort into a contest again.

SMFFFC XIV is probably the last one I'm participating in, for example.

Yeah I can agree with this. Also every save is always useful because of trading, so it encourages you to need to save on the hour every hour. As opposed to the relaxed nature of other save-mys where you save your favorites and have a lot of leeway to wait for them to be safe and then maybe you save someone you somewhat like in the last group if they are all safe.

Basically it increases drama and makes for more upsets at the cost of time-commitment.

Before I post the stats, I'll give my comments on the save trading. I didn't do it at all last year out of "principle." I hated it, as it took away from who's actually the most popular character and put more into which character happened to be in the stronger alliances. I also HATED that year's top ten, with pretty much the only character I really liked making it that far being Jack Sparrow. However, after Dodger's and Simba's untimely demises this time around, I decided to start doing it to get my few remaining favorites as far as possible. I now appreciate it a lot more, being able to get Mufasa WAY further than he would have EVER had a chance to otherwise. So, while it may not create the most legitimate results, and the top ten will certainly not be the most universally received, it does provide a way for popular but not "top tier" character to have a shot at a very deep run in such a contest. Although it does mean that your favorites are screwed if you don't have the time to dedicate to it... that's why you need alliances, I guess.

I've always said save trading is good. It offers more variety. Everyone can pretty much gather who the legit strong characters are. Chances are if you're a classic, or a renaissance character, or a character from a recent hit, you're popular. No need to have the same characters occupy the Top 20/30 every year.

Yeah, this was another problem I had with it before, but it's a little bit of a flawed approach. This contest and any other save my contest doesn't actually profess to present which character is the board's favorite. In the end it's a just game.

You can discover the board's favorite characters just by running a 1v1 bracket contest.

Okay, now... TANGLED STATS! With... probably the longest writeup I've given to a single character.

FLYNN RIDER
I: N/A
II: N/A
III: N/A
IV: 63/200 (69th percentile)
V: 10/200 (95th percentile)
Average placement: 36th
Average percentile: 82nd

HUGE jump for Flynn this time around, and since this is only his second contest it’s pretty difficult to get any sort of read from that without it being a complete guess. As mentioned before, characters that have pulled of jumps like this (Merlin would be a close example) plummeted the next contest. So next year might be a more telling time for Flynn’s strength in these contests, which result of the two was the fluke, or if he actually belongs somewhere in a happy medium. All that aside, this is a great finish for Flynn, and a very impressive improvement over his resting spot in the last contest. It’ll take next contest to see if he can keep this up, though.

RAPUNZEL
I: N/A
II: N/A
III: N/A
IV: 6/200 (97th percentile)
V: 9/200 (96th percentile)
Average placement: 8th
Average percentile: 97th

Yeah, the numbers pretty much speak for themselves here. Sixth in the her first contest, ninth in her second means she’s definitely not one to underestimate. The best two comparisons to make would be the character with the strongest first two contests, and the character with the strongest repertoire overall. The former would be Mulan, who placed 6th in her first contest and 2nd in her second contest (and of course, we all know about the third contest debacle that has since led to her downfall). Mulan is the only character to have a better two-contest start than Rapunzel (and by extension, the first three contests are guaranteed to go to Mulan as well). However, if Rapunzel can avoid the fall that followed Mulan out of the cheating scandal, she should end up stronger overall. The latter of the two comparisons would be with Belle. Belle’s first two contests would be weaker, at 10th and 18th, but her most recent two have been stronger, at 6th and 7th (and Belle is guaranteed to extend that lead over her with this contest). So, while Rapunzel’s average finish is stronger than Belle’s, Belle has demonstrated more strength than her. Still, this contest is definitely good cause to put Rapunzel into her league, with SMDC VI most likely being the final test in seeing whether she’s worthy of joining those ranks. So, while this is worse than her second finish, it was still an incredible outing for a relatively new character. If she can repeat, she’s golden. If not, she’s still going to be incredibly strong.

EDIT: Okay, apparently I completely overlooked Donald's first two contests...as those are much stronger. But he also experience a sharp drop afterwords (even worse than Mulan's) so the part afterwords still follows.

Also, if people really don't like your character they will eventually stop trading for him. This ensures garbage never enters a high percentage without rallying or alt voting.

The thing about trading is it changes the contest from being about the characters, to being about the people participating. It's still a contest, it's just that the people who put in the most effort get the most out of it. If you aren't one of those people, I can see why you wouldn't like it, since it kind of becomes a waste of time. But if you are one of those people, then it's just fun trying to get your characters as far as you can.

We could reinstate our alliance. I only had to break it, 'cause you came in a bit late, and I was worried about the potential to miss out on a 4th save.
