Limewire should pay for every sale that the RIAA lost due to its service. So like $1 million seems good if each song is $1. Maybe $2 mil to compensate for inflation.

She mentions the 2010 Arista Records LLC v. Usenet.com, Inc. case, in which Arista Records requested the court calculate the damages by multiplying the maximum amount of damages ($150,000) by the number of infringements (878), or $131,700,000. The court found the defendants liable for $6,585,000, by multiplying the number of infringements by $7,500.

In this case, Limewire is liable for 11000 works (songs). They could have at least been reasonable and asked for 82.5 million (11000 * 7500).

The RIAA can sue for whatever number they name. Limewire can countersue for 76 trillion if they choose to. Plaintiffs always start off with a ridiculously high number, because the only thing that number does is limit how much you'll get (you won't get more than you asked for).

In the past, this kind of accounting has worked for the RIAA in court because juries have gone along with their arguments and awarded damages in the hundreds of thousands to a million for relatively low numbers of uploads/downloads. But it won't work this time, because it's obvious to everyone that Limewire has not caused the RIAA 75 trillion in damages. This strategy of naming the absurdly high number is dangerous to the RIAA here, because it could finally create a precedent that their way of calculating damages is wrong.

It happens a lot. Although asking for a cartoonishly high number may be a bad idea because it could lower your credibility in the eyes of a jury. Then again, if this case gets to trial, there's a good chance the RIAA would have backpedaled on their number by then.

The RIAA might think that precedent is not really that valuable for them, because even if they won every case, if the defendants refuse to back down and go to trial, the RIAA would still lose money because of their legal fees. So, what they really need is fear- which can be generated by either precedent or by the threat of outrageously high damages.

"As Defendants note, Plaintiffs are suggesting an award that is 'more money than the entire music recording industry has made since Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877.'"

In roughly a decade of operation, LimeWire alone stole the ENTIRE RECORDED MUSIC INDUSTRY!

This is separate from other filesharing services such as Napster, Kazaa, and BitTorrent, which have also stolen several music industries between them.
