"As you read about catching pokemon, you find out that every area of the game has a type of pokemon per ball. For example you may have an area where pokeballs result in pidgeys, Great balls result in diglets, and Ultra balls result in Dugtrios. Catching pokemon is always automatic unless otherwise stated. Because of this it is important to obtain better versions of the pokeball in order to stay ahead. The pokemons level is also uniform across an area."

you find out that the game will progress linearly and every area will be visited in order with no backtracking no matter what. Because of this its possible for players to fail at gym battles and be forced to move on without the badges. This will end once victory road is reached and certain conditions are met. At that point players will be given the option to retry gym battles they failed at. This however will take up days. The game will end as soon as someone successfully defeats the elite 4 and their rival, meaning that a large amount of time making up badges will result in a disadvantage at the end of the game. It does however mean that people who fail to receive gym badges are still very much alive in the game. At the end of the game players will also have the ability to go back to areas and catch pokemon from those areas if they desire. Finally the three legendary birds will all have separate mini games attached to them outside of the main lottery topic. Each one can only be caught by one player.
Status Effects
As you read about status effects, you find out that they dont exist in a traditional sense. Instead of a random chance a pokemon will be inflicted, battles will have status effects predetermined in. For example a battle may say that going into the battle your pokemon will be burned. Use a Burn Heal? A failure to use a burn heal would decrease your odds of success. Status effect healing items also might be used outside of battle, as is shown today
types of pokemon
As you read about the types of pokemon and their levels, you find out that every battle has options that are deemed winning options, and losing options. Some options are worse than others, ranging from options that will faint your pokemon if you pick several bad ones in a row, to options that will immediately cause your pokemon to faint. There are two ways to swing the odds in your favor however. If your pokemon is a higher level than the opponent, or has a type advantage, then all options will be shifted up a rank in severity, or two ranks if both conditions are met. For example suppose that a battle has two correct answers, two answers that will hurt a pokemon, and one answer that will kill a pokemon outright. A level advantage could shift everything to three corrects and two hurts. A level and type advantage could shift everything to four corrects and one hurt. Likewise a type disadvantage could shift everything downwards. To 1 correct, 2 hurts, and 2 deaths.

According to him you never caught a pokémon that day. You trained one instead. He included the Google cache link and everything. Unless you changed your answer later and Google Cache didn't pick up on it (somehow), training is indeed what you did.
