my rule of thumb is regardless of price I give 4 dollars if it gets here in the amount of time they tell me, 1 dollar if its above that time. If they forget something or are just all around bad they get a stiff but that's happened like once.

Depends on how much I'm ordering, I wouldn't give a $4 for like two smaller pizzas. But I don't think there's ever a situation where I'd stiff the delivery guy, it could totally be the fault of the people making the pizza or something. If he's taking a long time he's probably gonna get **** on when he gets back anyway.

I feel like it could definitely be the people who prepared it's fault but then again they should check before they take it out for delivery. if it's messed up, call me and explain, and then I won't have any qualms with the driver.

It's not the delivery man's fault so why the **** should I punish him.

I don't like it when people scream at me for things I'm not responsible of so I doubt they like it too.

Agree. It doesn't happen much but I have received calls from drivers before saying something along these lines. More or less just the driver touching base with a realistic update on when it can be expected which is nice because the initial estimate from whoever took the call isn't as accurate.

5 dollars no matter what assuming they aren't dicks.

Example: If my order is messed up but the delivery guy is understanding and stuff gets changed I let it go.

I remember one time when we were moving there was nothing to eat in the house at all and my blood sugar got really low so I ordered a pizza and some wings so I wouldn't, ya know, drop to the floor. So anyway I had been ordering from this specific Pizza Hut for ten years or so and when the pizza and wings got there the pizza was really messed up and I wanted it sent back, but the guy wouldn't let me keep the wings for some reason.

I was in such a horrible mood I literally started to curse at him and tell him to go **** himself to the point he refused to come back out because he felt threatened. Oh, and this was the same night my PSP got stolen by my crackhead niece.

That was a funny night.

However, it's rare I get delivery unless it's like a party or something. I'm sure the deliverer loves the tip he gets at those.

Do you give a tip for the shop emploee that sold you something?
To the doctor that checked you?
To the old man that gave you newspaper?
To the mailman?
To the tech support of your ISP?

No? you don't? why? don't they "serve" you?
How are pizza delievry guys and waitresses are so different?
Why do they need tip? why do they get tip?
They are nothing special, they get their own money and they don't need extra money just because it's "socially accepted"

Isn't it illegal to pay someone under minimum wage?
Does the law recognize tipping as their real paycheck?

I mostly agree with you, but pizza delivery guys and waitresses are different because they get paid less than minimum wage(Well I'm not sure about pizza delivery).

Still, instead of tipping I say we should make it so those two jobs actually pay respectably. To me tipping should only be done if the job was done in an exceptional manner, not just adequate.

Yes, and yes. In the US, at least, there are two minimum wages, based on whether or not you receive tips or not, and wait staff and pizza delivery usually fall under that rule. And I may be wrong about this part, but I believe if an employee doesn't bring in enough tips, the employer is required to pay them as much as it would take to get them up to the other minimum wage.

Anyway,it's the other way around-they don't get paid because they get tips
This is something that everyone should understand and once everyone does,it will change-waitresses won't get tips and instead get their money from employer

Everyone here (suburbia) gives the mailman a little something at Christmas, and if he's a veteran, a little something for veteran's day. Waitress/livery types get paid basically out of tips, and it gives you the customer control over the type of service you expect to receive. Wouldn't you rather be able to dictate how much those guys make based on how well they did their jobs?

If employers raised waitstaff wages to be comparable to what they earn with tips (which is usually MORE than the normal minimum wage; eliminating tips and raising wages just to the non-tip minimum would screw over the employees), then you'd just get charged that much more for your food. More than that much more really, since owners aren't going to raise prices and not take a cut for themselves.

So you can either have a $10 pizza and tip $3, or have a $15 pizza. Tipping works out better for everyone but social maladjusts who can't handle the concept of tips.

That's nice in theory but how often do you actually do it?

Like, when I go to a restaurant, all I really want from a waiter is to be available in a reasonable amount of time and to not mess up the orders. And like 98% of them do just that. So I give them a standard 10-15%. It's not like I'm rating every waitress on a scale of 1-10 on a variety of different grading criteria. This isn't a video game review here.

Also, it doesn't really give you control over the type of service, since you do it afterwards. If you were required to tip as soon as you sat down, THAT would probably dictate the level of service you would receive.

That's really speculative man [to GreenOnion].

I could just counter with the consumer mindset that most people don't take tips into account when going to eat.

If food itself was that much more, it would hurt business because people will always be used to their 10 dollar hamburger + tip, and will not pay 15 without tip.

That's what I do with lower end service like food delivery, sure. It's suburbia, I can get a pizza in a dozen places tonight.

but if you have 3 cable/ISP companies and they all have the same general level of quality, you don't have options. I'd love for those guys to work for some method of tip instead of just sorta lazily going through the motions.

doctors at the family practice are roughly the same quality as well. the better practices are booked up, so unless you have an "in" or get lucky, you are again stuck without many options.

Yet,I need to be polite, nice, patient and if they scream at me because the printer dies after one month I have to calm them down

No,at best they can vote on a survey or send a thanks-letter and I will get a bonus money depending on those surveys(or survies,I dunno sorry) from my employer, not from the costumers

Also, if tips stopped, they'd likely be a little less paranoid about time frames. Like not late late, but a few minutes each time. Why should they care, the money was already paid. I've seen it a couple times when I've paid tip online due to not having cash. But nothing serious.

Also, people are terrible at putting two and two together. People would complain that the food is no greater quality so why should they pay more. You could tell them that there is no tip and they may shut up, but they're still disgruntled.

I literally use the crappy phone tip calculator that started way back when and round up to the nearest dollar to make it even plus whatever change from the order...unless they did something crazy good or bad. Like once we ate out and we took my 2 year old nieces....and my sister was told once by a waitress "Don't worry honey, we have kids come in here all the time. We'll clean up" and has since then insisted we leave their mess. I tipped that poor waitress quite a bit more than usual. At least double.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but screwed up orders are very rare for me.

Like, for me, a tip is just an annoying exercize in extra math I'm forced to go through at the end of the night. I can probably count on one hand the times I've left no (or a really small) tip due to terrible service. I've NEVER left an extra large one for great service, because I'm not even sure what "great service" is. Just bring me the food I asked for, show up every five minutes or so to fill up the water, and leave us alone, that's all I really want. No way to really go "above and beyond" that imho.
