I really hate FF8. It had potential, but the awful cast and odd Junction system made me not want to finish it. Well this time, unless I feel tortured by it, I will finish the game! And I will post reactions here.
Here we go.

Uggggh FF8 and your strange controls. Triangle is cancel? Circle is menu? FF7 was odd as well with that, only Circle was accept and X was cancel. FF9 had the controls in the right spots thankfully.
Opening movie is cool. Rinoa is hotter than I remembered her being. Quistis though...holy crap. Something about a chick in glasses just drives me nuts.
Squall and Seifer are fighting. Cool. Maybe they'll kill each other and we can have two new characters! No? Aww...
I want to like Squall because he looks cool as hell. Has the biker/tough guy vibe about him. Like maybe if the Fonz was a bit emo? But ugh that personality. THAT ROTTEN EMPTY SHELL OF A PERSONALITY!
Call me immature, but I named Squall "Turd". It makes me giggle.
Ok, so blah blah blah, exam later, talk to hot teacher after class, etc. I booted up the desk thingy because I'm thinking you can find stuff stashed in it. Or is that later? So many options. Ok, let's look later. I wanna talk to hot teacher.
lol Squall didn't do his prerequisite. Naturally. Lazy oaf.
Ok so we're on the way to that and...Squall bumps into ANOTHER hot girl. Chicks are like magnetized to this guy or something. I'm trying really hard to make this guy likable by picking the nice choices, but he's still a douche somehow. This girl is Selphie right? I'm now taking her on tour. She's happy and bubbly, the complete opposite of Mr. Personality I'm controlling here.
She's taking the exam too eh? How exciting! Ok, now let's go find sexy teacher and advance the plot.

Not true. I want to like it this time around. And the game itself is good enough so far.
By douchey, I mean Squall's "whatever" and other assorted cold responses to like...everything. I don't like those kinds of people. Especially when Quistis is just trying to be nice to him and get to know him.

From: StifledSilence | #013 I want to like it this time around. Yes, and naming the main character "Turd" is a sure sign that you want to like the game!
Thinking the main character is a turd doesn't mean I don't want to like the game! Actually, I usually name the rival some sort of nickname of fecal matter in Pokemon games and I love those. It just makes me laugh to see a character referred to as "Turd" or "Crap" or "Stool" for some reason.

I shall name you...TurdBird and IceHo! lol yeah yeah, immature, etc.
Ok, so world map, battle this floating thing, draw some magic, yay.
The drawing thing bugs me. I hate finite supplies of magic. I mean, running out of MP isn't an issue with this system, but having to steal magic from enemies to keep a supply is just lame. I loved FF9's system of learning abilities through equipment. Even Materia in FF7 was pretty cool. But this? Meh...
Ok, so Fire Cavern. I'm guessing Ifrit will probably be here (I seriously don't remember, but it makes sense.)
Time limit? Fine. I can probably do this in ten minutes, but I want to draw you...I mean draw the magic from enemies! So let's go with 20 minutes. Any longer than that and I will lose my mind in this likely easy dungeon.
Bats? Weird winged beastie? Bombs yay! They no go boom though. I purposely dragged a fight out for a boom just for laughs, but no boom. Aww. Die then!
Ifrit chamber! Wow, he has a ton of HP for an early boss. Or was I supposed to just use Shiva a few times in a row to get him to give up? Either way, I wrapped it up with 8 minutes left on the clock. I shall name you...HeatMiser! I kinda wish I named Shiva SnowMiser now...
UGH TUTORIAL AGAIN STOP IT!
Alright, I'm back out on the world map and I saved. That's enough for the moment. More to come probably later tonight!
For the record, I'm enjoying it so far. I remember it being good for awhile but then everyone gets so...whiny. But that's for later. Thumbs up for now!

you can change the controls. i always change FF8 and 9 to FF7's controls.
as for spells, you can easily stock up more than 300 if you want to both junction and use them. or stock up on refining items. and if you're not both junctioning and using the same spell, you don't really have to worry about quantity.
yeah there is nothing worth drawing outside of bosses for a decent bit, and by the time you can draw something decent in a random encounter, you probably could have refined it already
If you want to make the early-mid game really easy, win some rare cards and refine them into items. The Zell card can be gotten really early, and gives you three +60% strength items.
Of course, half the fun of the game is getting/playing cards, so you'd be missing out!
Level grinding at the moment. Encountered a T-Rex and whooped its ass. Like I would run away from it, silly Quistis. Damn thing sure had a ton of HP though.

Plot and stuff! Zell looks much more girlish than I remember. Like a butch lesbian or something. And the face tattoo is bizarre. But he seems interesting enough. Mr. Downer wants a partner without a personality. And Quistis mocks his coldness XD. She's so awesome.

The real way to break the game is use Zell, keep him at low life, and use Limit break to insta-gib anything. with Booya>Heel Drop>Booya>Heel Drop xN or do the easier one and do Booya>Punch Rush xN.
Children card games also is godlike for being broken. Can easily get All the junctions you'll need early and Everyone's 3rd tier weapons at the start of the game by just abusing the card game+Refines.
If you want to make the game more challenging. Actually leveling up makes it harder. Since all the enemies scale on your level for the most part. Their drops do too actually.
Uggggh FF8 and your strange controls. Triangle is cancel? Circle is menu? FF7 was odd as well with that, only Circle was accept and X was cancel.
FF7's control scheme was actually the norm for a lot of Japanese RPGs. SNES RPGs used the same button placement for the most part, as well. And MGS stuck with it through MGS3, oddly enough.
FF8, on the other hand. I have no idea what the f*** was up with that.
