I understand this may be a rudimentary computer question, but I have very little hardware experience. I had some comp problems this past week that compromised the files I've had saved for the last eight years. Turns out it was just a faulty power supply and I was able to replace it, but it has still taught me to be more cautious. I have the computer working again and have a 1TB external hard (way more than enough space), but I lack the KNOWLEDGE. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, my lone encounter with Geek Squad as a result of this whole thing has led me to believe they are shockingly incompetent.

Yeah, I'm not sure if you're expecting something more complex than this? I just reset my computer recently, and this is what I did. Just open up My Computer and My Documents and copy files.

They are.

Also, if you want it automatically, look at the Window's Backup service. It's somewhere in the control panel

Depending on the external drive, it may come with automatic backup software. If it does, run the software and setup the automatic backup however you'd like (every time you plug in the device, or at a certain time every day/week).

If the drive didn't come with any of this, then yeah your only real solutions are Windows Backup and Restore or the drag and drop method.

There's a couple backup programs out there that are free. Without just dragging and dropping them, consider stuff like Seagate discussed if your drive is Seagate, or western digital has one of their own too.

If neither, or you want a quick backup that compresses well, paragon is the best all purpose free one.
