the last one I've played was 4 and I loved that one to death. I think I played...6? for about 5 minutes and I could NOT get the hang of it, I was too used to how 4 played
so uh,
hows 7? thats the one that gets all the buzz, right?
Weaku you will just blindlessly praise it so I don't need your opinion!
Best game in the series so far. Free Mode isn't there any more (at least not in the same way), but the Story Mode is superb and the Conquest Mode is pretty deep too, can spend hours in there.

Objectively, 7 is amazing. Its post-story content is kinda lacking compared to previous DWs, but my god is the story mode good. I spent over 30 hours just doing the story mode and I was extremely satisfied by that alone. Gameplay is really refined, too, with each character getting unique EX attacks and 2 musous each that make them feel individualized, even though they can all use any weapon.
Dynasty Warriors 6 was pretty bad, while Dynasty Warriors 7 is probably the best the series has been in years. The story mode is leagues above where it used to be, and even somewhat captures the feeling of the novel at moments. I'm a big fan of both the novel and the actual history, so the improved story mode was amazing for me.
The gameplay is really polished and the ability to swap between two weapons and essentially use any weapon is a great addition. Don't listen to those that say the ability to use other weapons is a bad thing. Their argument is that it makes all characters the same...well no s*** if you decide to use the same weapon with every single character. Each character has a weapon type that they have a special affinity with (default weapon) and they get an EX move (usually mashing on the Y/Triangle button a few more times after a charge attack) with that weapon. Generally the character's EX move is something unique that you might want to use often. I stick with keeping the default original weapon type with every character and often have a trump card of a really good weapon or a fun one. That being said some characters are better with certain weapons, but you can almost ignore that since you can learn skills that automatically max your proficiency with a given weapon type.
I've played just about every musou/warriors game and Dynasty Warriors 7 is one of my favorites. If you loved 4, I could easily see you loving 7. On top of that you'll have fun getting used to quite a few new characters and even a new kingdom faction.
I played the demo of the first gundam DW. it was reallyyyy fun, but I recognize it must have lots of fanservice for Gundam fans. I felt I'd be missing out and want to get the full experience so Held off on it til I caught up on the animes
I've yet to watch a single episode

Is Dynastu Warriors Gundam 3 any good? I've never played Dynasty Warriors before but it caught my eye.
DW3 is supposed to have good gameplay, but that's about it. I hear the maps are pretty bland and the story is probably standard gundam mashup fare with static images talking at each other.
but if you're a big gundam fan, you'll probably love it.
i myself have only seen 3 of the shows, so i didn't really get too drawn into DWG2.
If you don't care about story (and 7's story is genuinely good, not just good for a Dynasty Warriors game) you might want to get Warriors Orochi 3 instead, though. Has a hell of a lot more playable characters, and I liked the gameplay a little bit more. You're also a lot less limited in terms of which characters you play as in story mode.
i dunno about other DW games, but 7XL adds 3 new characters for wei (well, two new ones and Pang De, who was in 5) and Legend Mode, which is a bunch of stages built around characters that didn't get any screen time in the original game's story mode and a bunch of updated versions of stages from older games.
They add a bunch of new weapon styles in as well, giving Zhao Yun, Xiahou Dun, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei brand new weapons.
but yeah, Turus is right. If you don't really care for the Three Kingdoms part of DW, then you might be better off with WO3. 135 characters, including the new ones to 7XL, and all the new weapons from 7XL are in WO3, in addition to updated movesets for characters that share weapons. No English dub, though.
But I think anyone would enjoy DW7's story mode even if they weren't a big fan of the three kingdoms.
