I got my name in the letter section of this issue I think!

I know I'm in one of them!

If it's this issue, you're either the kid who wanted Sonic to started the Antoine Haters Club, wanted to know what happens to Robotnik on the TV Show, the #1 Tails fan, or the one who actually wanted to see more Cal and Al. Or one of the many mentioned for coloring in a page of one of the previous issues!

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #9
April 1994

"Pseudo-Sonic" starts things off. As you might guess from the title, Sonic's opponent is a robotic clone of himself Robotnik built (only requires 3500 AA batteries!). We'll get there in a bit. First we have a possible Knothole Discovery spot, with Antoine guarding the secret entrance to Knothole Village. Wouldn't having a guard right in front of the entrance be a good indication that the secret entrance is right there? You tell me.

Anyway, Sonic's off to get some flowers for Sally, but accidentally picks up some poisonous ones that he's also allergic to, gets real swollen up and passes out. During that time, Pseudo-Sonic makes his way to Knothole's entrance, with Antoine of course not being able to tell the difference. The rest of the gang easily tell it's a robotic clone, but before it can reveal the location of Knothole, Tails of all people saves the day by dragging his two tails real fast on the ground to generate enough static electricity to not only screw up Robotnik's feed but also destroy Pseudo-Sonic. Meanwhile, Robotnik spots the real (and severely weakened) Sonic while tracking his robot's last known location. Luckily we have Betty Butterfly to let the FF know where he is, and Sonic is saved just in time by mah gurl Bunnie, who beats the **** out of Robotnik and literally throws him all the way back to Robotropolis. Hell Yeah! On top of that she also cures him of his allergic reactions. Totally should have been Sonic x Bunnie instead of Sonic x Sally. Then again there's still 200+ issues for Archie to fix that. Anyway, that ends the story.

You get to learn how to draw Sonic in a ministory. I like that.

"What's The Point?" is story number two. Sonic finds a porcupine-bird and decides to bring it to Knothole as a present for Sally's birthday. Turns out she hates it (especially after it eats her cake) and wants Sonic to take it back where he found it. As Sonic is finding a safe place for the bird, he spots Sally (who was picking berries for making another cake) captured by an EVIL TREE. Sonic spends an entire panel getting all the cheesy tree-related puns out of the way so we don't have to read them later. Before he himself is captured, Thorny the bird saves him and shows him which tree is the evil one. Sonic makes quick work of the tree, but here comes Robotnik armed with a freeze blaster. Thorny saves the day again by taking a **** on Robotnik's head and pecking him in the ass. Okay it was an egg and not poop. NOW Sally likes the damn thing. Whatever, the end.

Awesome pin-up of a totally ripped Sonic. I wish I could find a picture.

Great story followed by a bad one, but I'll take it. It's nice to see Sonic in moments of weakness every now and then.

"Revenge Of The Nerbs" is our first story. The gang is trying to cut electrical lines to shut down Robotnik's factories, but accidentally cut one that activates a force field around them. Luckily a Nerb appears from the ground (some green looking thing, clearly a Smurf and/or the candy Nerds ripoff) and the FF force their way into the tunnel against its wishes. The nerbs are dicks and don't want anything to do with them, so they leave. On the way out, Sonic spots Robotnik digging underground with one of his inventions, as well as some captured nerbs (who are still dicks). They're such dicks that they don't even thank Sonic for rescuing them. Anyway, Sonic stops the underground digging by flooding the Mobius River inside. As he's outrunning the rushing water, we get a cameo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That's the best part of the story. Sonic saves day, story over. Good god this was awful.

"'Twan With The Wind" is the next one. The gang's in their hot air balloon scouting a good spot for their annual FF picnic, which is a stupid idea because they're sitting ducks. Then again, it was Antoine's idea to use the balloon so there ya go. Sure enough, some badniks show up and pop the balloon and they crash. The buzzbombers report to Robotnik, who apparently is aware that the FF hold a picnic every year. He invites himself there, presumably for evil reasons. He ambushes the FF, but Antoine (who had been away trying to repair the balloon) shows up with it fully repaired. The Buzzbombers try to pop it again, but Antoine throws a bucket of mud at them, plummeting the bots to the ground. Then he tosses sandbags filled with explosives down at the swatbots, THEN he grabs Robotnik by his cape and drops him into a pond. Idiot, you could have killed Robotnik right then and there! Whatever, that ends it.

Reader mail is full of Tails fanboys and girls. Someone wanted a 1000 issue Tails mini-series. I wonder what year the 1000th issue would be if they started that in 1993.

This may be the worst issue yet. The first story is GOD AWFUL, definitely the worst story so far. I came this close to saving your time and not write anything about it. The nerbs should be curbstomped from this comic forever. For the second, I hate hate hate how Antoine is depicted in the story. He anticipates an attack by Robotnik, even though he's always the first to freak out when these attacks happen. He's so clever that he not only has buckets of mud ready for the Buzzbombers (this I can buy a little bit), but he also is smart enough to fill up all the sandbags with explosives. WHERE DID HE GET THESE EXPLOSIVES? Finally, apparently he's so strong he can pick Robotnik up by only his cape.

Antoine is a coward. He is not an alpha male. He is at his best when he has to force himself to be brave and fight, and that's usually only when he's the only one that can save somebody important to him (and that wasn't the case with the ambush in this issue...Sonic would have whipped Robotnik's ass). He doesn't need to swag all over the place; we have Sonic for that. This just irritates me a lot.

Lastly, the cover has nothing to do with the stories and the artwork is kinda off. Augh...

Nerbs are a running joke on the bumbleking forums (forums ran by the current head writer, Ian Flynn). One of the artists/mods on the forums pushed for it so hard that eventually they reappeared in a recent story arc (now part of the Dark Egg Legion).

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #11
June 1994

"The Good, The Bad, And The Hedgehog" is the first story. Sonic's on his way to stop a toxic waste dump via the Cosmic Interstate, which is an alternate dimension-like place that works as a shortcut to get around Mobius. He gets lost and ends up in an alternate version of Mobius where Robotnik is good and the FF are the bad guys. The alternate FF look like punks, with Antisonic have the best design with his biker jacket and cool shades. They end up racing each other, which allows Sonic to set up a trap by running into Robotnik's vet clinic. He speeds off just as Antisonic runs in and is immediately captured by Robotnik. Sonic finally manages to get back to real Mobius, stops the toxic dump, and saves the day. Fun Fact: Two panels have dialogue ripped word for word from The Beatles' "Hello Goodbye" and Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Anyway, that's the end.

Some Sonic fan artwork shown, and they all look very creepy.

"Beat The Clock" is the next story. Coconuts has somehow captured all the FF sans Sonic and tied them up with a ton of timed explosives. Sonic of course shows up with three seconds remaining and takes off, leaving Coconuts to get blown up by his bombs. It's short, but counts as a full story. This story does confirm that Sally is completely smitten with Sonic though.

Reader mail actually shows up before the final story. Three bits: There's a Sonic 4 reference over a decade before its release, someone thought Robotnik was a robot himself, and one fan literally said this, "Please make Robotnik's head fall off. Please tell him he has a big butt."

"Food For Thought/You Are What You Eat" is the final story. Sonic dreams that everyone has taken the form of food (he naturally is a chili dog). Chili Dog Sonic rushes to save French Fry Tails from being deep-fried by Cheeseburger Robotnik, but falls into a trap and is captured himself. Before he gets fried though, he wakes up, and we find out it's his birthday! That wraps it up.

The first story is great and introduces some things that will show up later on. I'm positive Antisonic returns later on, and we'll also see more of the Cosmic Interstate as we progress through the comic.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #12
July 1994

"A Timely Arrival" is the first story. Robotnik builds a time machine and sends Sonic back into the prehistoric past. Right off the bat we get the dumbest editor's note ever. Sonic says "Hokey Smokes! A Pterodon*!" with the note being *Pterodactyl*. Why not just say Pterodactyl in the first place and be done with it? Anyway, Sonic escapes the flying beast only to fall towards the waiting mouth of a T-Rex. The Almighty Sonic Spin (should I abbreviate this to ASS?) breaks all of its teeth (Sonic can be an ******* sometimes). After all that jazz he meets his ancestor, Sonugh The Boghog! Sonugh's design is basically Sonic with a wizard's beard, and yes it's awesome. If we're getting a Sonic ancestor, you can deduce that we're also getting a Robotnik ancestor, and sure enough the evil Ivo Robughnik appears! There can't be any way this is canonically feasible but let's go with it. Robughnik catapults a boulder right on the hogs, and we get a funny bit where Robughnik is celebrating smashing Sonic exactly the same way and time as Robotnik is celebrating Sonic's banishment 400,000 years later. It's also great in that in doing so Robotnik violates three of his own laws (singing, dancing, and smiling), and he ends up smashing a Crabmeat that caught him in the act. Robotnik gets ambushed by the FF (Robotnik line, "I can't escape - Mother told me never to run with scissors!"). That's seriously the reason they give for Robotnik being totally trapped.

Back in the past the two hogs escaped that boulder by digging underground just before it hit. Sonugh brings Sonic to his hideout to meet the Freedom Fighters, who outside of some minor outfit differences look exactly the same. Alright there's no way I can buy this. It gets worse: apparently Sonic is directly responsible for causing Boghogs to evolve into Hedgehogs via forcing the Past FF to live on the surface of Mobius instead of underground. Thankfully the Present FF save me from more of this mess by teleporting Sonic back into present day.

Up next, "The Bold-Headed Eagle." Sonic runs straight off a cliff as soon as it starts and lands in a giant nest, where he meets the last eagle on Mobius, Cyril. Sonic convinces to try flying again, but Cyril ends up dropping to a lower end of the cliff. He meets up with other members of his flock that he thought had been captured years ago but turn out alright. At the same time Robotnik ambushes Sonic riding a Rambot (giant Ram, it's pretty sweet). Sonic gets rammed off the cliff but is saved by a rejuvenated Cyril, whereas a chunk of the cliff falls apart, taking Robotnik and Snively with it. End.

"The Lynx Is A Jynx" is the third story. Sonic rescues Larry Lynx, who believes that he brings misfortune to everyone he contacts. The tree branch he was on breaks, injuring all the FF, causing them to believe (except for Sonic) that he is a jynx. They refuse to let him hide out in Knothole. While out trying to find a new hiding spot, Sonic and Larry spot the rest of the FF captured by some swatbots. Sonic uses Larry as bait to get intentionally captured, which leads to bad luck turning against the swatbots via various malfunctionings. Robotnik appears and is about to run over Sonic with his vehicle, but Larry's appearance causes it to go out of control, and Robotnik crashes into a wall. Apparently all this helps break the bad luck streak, and that ends this story.

Not a good issue at all. Nobody cares about Cyril or Larry Lynx, and the first story doesn't make sense from a logical standpoint. However, we're getting something big next issue, and that will come tomorrow.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #13
August 1994

Two things from the cover: It tells you right there that this is the first appearance by Knuckles in the comic! Also, the comic is now a quarter more expensive, being priced at $1.50 (I'll be tracking this).

"This Island Hedgehog" is the first story, and it's our second video game adaptation! This time we get a much better game, Sonic 3. Sonic and Tails discover Angel Island and their plane is immediately attacked by Knuckles. Stranded on the island, they try to escape a bot by diving into some water, which takes them through Hydrocity Zone. Just as they're about to drown, they end up in a pitch black area, where they finally encounter Knuckles. Knuckles says that Robotnik told him they were trying to steal the emerald (with Robotnik himself watching all of this from a monitor). He gives Sonic & Tails ten minutes to get off the island, so they take off (as they leave the dark cave, there's a sign that says "Gotham City - 14 miles"). Sonic realizes that they don't have to prove their innocence, since Robotnik will likely do it for them (at this point Robotnik has acquired the Chaos Emerald keeping the island afloat).

Knuckles cuts them off at the emerald's location, where he discovers it's missing. Since Knuckles is actually smart, he figures out quickly that Sonic could not have possibly taken it, which means he was duped. They end up finding Robotnik and snatch the emerald back using Sonic's speed. Robotnik takes off, and Sonic & Tails leave the island with their plane that had since been repaired. Not really an adaptation but a good story to introduce Knuckles. We won't see the last of him.

"Space In Yo' Face" is the next story. The gang find out that Robotnik has built a space weapon called Robostorm that can fire roboticizing rays at Mobius, covering a 100-mile radius. They head to the weapon and attempt to sabotage it, but then they see Robotnik heading towards them. They take off in Robostorm before he can reach it, and now they're stuck in space. Robotnik pursues them in another spacecraft and fires a ray that kills all the power in Robostorm. With the choice of either being towed back to Mobius and roboticized or be left drifting in space forever, the FF choose option C: crash land on the nearest moon, which turns out to be full of muck. Both ships get stuck in the mud, but Robotnik then tells us that his ship...is a TRANSFORMER. The transformer launches a devastating kick at Robostorm, but the FF had already left the ship before it happened. Now being chased down by Robotnik in a landrover, Sonic uses his tornado to make a giant mud statue of Robotnik. Since he loves anything that looks like him, Robotnik pauses to marvel at the statue...until it falls on top of him. The FF take the Transformer and escape back to Mobius with Robotnik and Snively stuck in the mud, and that's it. We'll see if there's any continuity to how Robotnik gets off the moon or it it just gets ignored...

Very good issue. The second story will get weakened if it doesn't get followed up on but even if it's a stand-alone it was very well done. The conflicts were set up nicely and they actually took the entire story in both cases to be resolved. All I ask is that not every problem Sonic faces is resolved in the very next panel (which was the case for a ton of stories leading up to this point). Definitely a top tier issue at the moment.

Not-So-Hidden Knothole: 2
Super Sonic appearance: 1
Video Game Adaptations: 2 (Spinball, 3)
Price Changes: 1

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #14
September 1994

"Tails' Taste Of Power" is the first story. WOO TAILS STORY! Sonic asks Tails to water the plants in Rotor's greenhouse, which pisses Rotor off. One sentence and it's time for a rant (a good one this time). One thing I always found funny (yet at the same time sad) was that the Freedom Fighters always treat Tails like he's absolutely incapable of doing anything without someone's help, even though he hardly ever gives them a reason to think that way. The kid can build ****ing airplanes for crying out loud! This is why I'm a huge fan of Tails really...never gets any credit from his friends even though he's easily at least the 3rd best FF in the group. Case in point: in this story the plants grow really huge, and Tails explains why, "I created a new plant food based on the equation X equals the degree of sunlight times the number of chromosomes divided by the process of photosynthesis." How am I supposed to figure that out?

Anyway, it turns out that Tails ate the only fruit Rotor could grow from the Tree of Wisdom, which made him super intelligent. If I had time I would write every line Tails says from here out, but I don't so I'll just say it's very pretentious yet funny cause Tails is saying it. He believes that he should be the leader of the FF now, and intends to prove it by defeating Robotnik by himself (sound familiar?). Unfortunately by the time he encounters Robotnik, the effects of the fruit wear off (only lasts 24 hours), and he is easily captured. Luckily Rotor figured this out in time for Sonic to speed over and save him from impending doom. That's pretty much it.

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is the next story (better be a Bunnie lead...). First panel is absolutely brilliant. Robotnik is playing with electronic puppets of Sonic, Sally, and Bunnie, and the Sally figure says "Math is hard" while the Bunnie one says "My place is in the kitchen." OHHHH YEAHHH. All the alpha males agree with Robotnik when he says that truer words have never been spoken! Honestly I would have not expected this in a children's comic in 1994, but whatever I laughed. The rest of the story is short but still pretty good: Bunnie and Sally are kidnapped by Robotnik, who's planning to ambush Sonic when he eventually rescues them. To his surprise, Bunnie and Sally end up cleaning house on all the swatbots and tie up Robotnik and escape. I don't know why they would tie him up and just leave him sitting there when they could have, you know, at the very least put him to trial.

Good issue, it fleshes out Tails desire to be a hero or at least be recognized for accomplishments and also establishes Sally as a formidable fighter (she's usually known for her brain rather than her brawn). Don't know why Robotnik would think that Bunnie isn't a good fighter given that she's half-roboticized, but I'll let it pass because he thought that Sonic alone took care of everything (and the majority of stories presented so far suggest that is the case).

I wouldn't say "bumbling" to describe Tails at this point. He's not an idiot. Hell just last issue he did just fine with Sonic on Angel Island. He's definitely childish with his dreams of being THE hero and getting very cocky when any slight fortune goes his way but I like that as part of his character. That's why he makes mistakes that force Sonic to bail him out each time. It's not being dumb...he just really wants to be like Sonic even though he's not ready yet.

I love how he just casually flicks the stone away while he's up in the air.

I'd say it's the first real funny story that didn't need to be cheesy to make it so.

Sonic The Hedgehog Issue #15
October 1994

"Rockin' The Bot" starts things off. Sonic saves a frog from a mudslide, who turns out to be magical. The frog gives Sonic three stones that boost strength, elasticity, and leaping ability for a period of time. Sonic brushes this off and nonchalantly hands them over to Tails. Just when I think this will be a Tails story, I get swerved, as an ambush by Robotnik's Beetlebot forces Sonic to take the stones back for his own use. We get some funny bits here because Sonic forgets what stone does what. When Robotnik launches a boulder at the FF, Sonic grabs the red stone (thinking it's strength), but gets completely splattered since it was actually the elasticity stone. Then, when the other FF get captured, he grabs the yellow stone to take apart the machine, only to leap miles in the air and crash land to the ground. With only one stone left, Sonic finally dismantles the bot with a tree trunk attached to a giant slab of rock, using the green stone's strength to help him do so. Day is saved, and that's it.

"What's The Big Idea?" is up next. It's really an expanded ministory, as the FF debate on what Rotor has been spending a week on inventing in his lab. We get stuff like a nuclear-powered skateboard and glow-in-the-dark popcorn, but it turns out that Rotor made a thermos, which the rest of the group thinks is stupid. The End.

"Animal Magnetism" is the third story. Robotnik invents the Magnabot (giant magnet machine) to capture Bunnie, which will lure the other FF into being captured. As she hangs on to a tree to avoid capture, Sonic grabs a metal object to lure Robotnik into chasing him. Robotnik fires a magnetic blast full force, which Sonic dodges of course, but the key here was Sonic got the machine to face Robotropolis, which causes a ton of metal to completely engulf the Magnabot. After all that, to prevent another story like this from happening again, Rotor coats Bunnie's robotic parts with a solution that nullifies magnetic effects. That will do it.

Not a significant issue in the grand scheme of things outside of the Bunnie thing, but two pretty good stories came out of it so it was a satisfying read.
