When the majority of PS2 owners have purchased at least 2 systems because the first one broke down almost without fail.

This is the case with pretty much all consoles, though. Especially 360. So it's still a fine comparison.

I owned one NES, one SNES, one N64, two Gamecubes (first one was stolen), one Wii, one Game Boy, one Game Boy Advance, and one Xbox.

I owned one PS1 (that is now completely broken) and five PS2s.

None of my consoles have ever had to be replaced I still have my PS2 from 2001, that has really terrible disc reads right now, but it still works. If I cleaned the lens it would probably speed up again.

Anecdotal evidence is fun, but useless.

The PS2 had some issues with its first models, but after about 2 years or so the models coming out were actually pretty reliable. Much more than the most other systems of the past few gens.

When 90% of the values used to describe the PS2 were "shipped" values rather than "sold" values.

I guess I've been fortunate. My PS3 60gig fat model that I bought five days after launch is the first console I've ever had that stopped working.

Consoles that I have that are still working:

Commodore 64
NES(although sometimes I have to play around with the loading tray a bit before the game will work)
SNES
Genesis
Sega CD
Playstation
Playstation 2
Gamecube
Xbox

I had a 360 at one point but sold it after about 6 months.
I've never owned a Wii or N64

Also its probably not a coincidence that the PS3 was the closest to launch I've ever bought a console. The rest of them had been out for at least a year. Probably should have waited on that one too.
