Song of One Hundred Sixty Days Ago: Bobby Brown Goes Down (from Sheik Yerbouti)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtzmsczw3U0

This should be a fair representation of what the Halloween 77 version will sound like, though obviously that version will lack the massive overdubs of this one. (Kind of a shame, really - the overdubbed multi-layered vocals in this version are certainly a nice addition!)

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Nine Days Ago: Conehead (from You Are What You Is)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnLnvY1kAqw

Now this is interesting - the second '77 tour (the one the 10/31 show is from) was the first tour "Conehead" appeared, and back then it was an instrumental that sounded radically different than the "Conehead" we know and love (I barely hear "Conehead" in it, frankly), and was mainly used as a vehicle for a Frank guitar solo. Definitely would be nice if we would get an official release of this one.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Eight Days Ago: Flakes (from Sheik Yerbouti)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwkbV8WujxI

Should be fairly similar to the Halloween 77 version, though this version has overdubs. All of the vocals during Adrian Belew's guitar solo are overdubbed, except for Bozzio's "one two three four" yells. I like the overdubbed vocals, but getting a new Adrian solo sans vocals would be nice.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Seven Days Ago: Big Leg Emma (from Absolutely Free [CD versions])
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGjdW3aOfAI

Well, the Halloween 77 version will probably sound more like the Zappa in New York version. Don't think this is a song Frank needed to resurrect in the '70s, but eh, it's fun enough.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Six Days Ago: Envelopes (from Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMmOLJN-AjQ

This may actually be the first time we've ever done this tune. I know I've never done it, at least, as I don't like "Envelopes" at all. I'm not a fan of the Zappa compositions that are nothing but an avalanche of dissonance. Frank really didn't need to bring this one to the '80s (this version was performed live on the '81 tour).

On the second '77 tour, "Envelopes" actually had lyrics that were sung by Tommy Mars. I guess that's kinda interesting but other than that... bleh. For the record, it did start out as an instrumental way back in '70.

The live versions of this song were always more energetic than the Zoot Alures version, but this isn't a great song no matter what version it is.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Three Days Ago: Wild Love (from Sheik Yerbouti)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0gkFD5k1sY

Getting "Wild Love" on Halloween 77 would be great, as after the composed parts there was actually a solo section with Frank and several of his band members playing extended solos (Frank cut all of this out of the Sheik Yerbouti version, probably to save space). But aside from that, I love the composed parts of this song.

Great song, doesn't matter which version it is. (The 10/31/'77 version was actually already released in its entirety on Baby Snakes [both the album and the movie], so nothing new on Halloween 77 as far as "Titties & Beer" is concerned, unfortunately.)

I feel like "The Black Page" is a number we haven't done that often - not sure why, though! One of Frank's most iconic compositions - both the drum solo and the one with other instruments.

Song of One Hundred Forty-Six Days Ago: Time Is Money (from Sleep Dirt/Läther)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jRe27I2x7g

Uploaded a few days ago by PLASTICDADA - his first upload of an official Zappa track since May (he did upload a bootleg in July, but I avoid doing bootlegs because of the generally poor sound quality)! (The combination of PLASTICDADA uploading next to nothing, me slacking, Muffin working like 60 hours a week and probably being too busy to spend time on this, and there being no Zappa News for a long time is probably why we're so far behind now.) Yes, he already uploaded the vocal version of "Time Is Money," but this is the original instrumental version from the Sleep Dirt LP and 2012 Universal CD. It's nice that the vocal version is on his channel, actually, because that's becoming a bit of a rarity. You'll have to find a Rykodisc CD version of Sleep Dirt to own it now! Anyway, I think this is a great number, either with or without the vocals.

Zappa Rumors (yeah, we're doing this!): Just read on a Zappa message board that there's supposedly going to be an official release of the original version of Läther - the version of the album Frank played on the radio in '77, the stuff that originally appeared on Zappa in New York, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt and Orchestral Favorites, and all of the official releases of Läther were all remixes Frank made later. No idea how valid this is, but it would certainly be cool!

Didn't realize it when I said this, but "Tryin' to Grow" from 10/31/'77 has already been released on YCDTOSA 6. I guess the odds of getting yet another version that hadn't been released yet were slim! But yeah, that version does sound very similar to the Hammersmith Odeon version, so I was right about that!

Zappa News: Finally, Halloween 77 (the 3 CD version) and Halloween 77 (the "costume box set" version) are officially announced. Here's the news article about this posted on the official site:

Halloween 77 Box Set Celebrates the Historic Concert Run's 40th Anniversary - October 20

Frank Zappa's legendary Halloween NYC 1977 residency to be released as a massive Halloween 77 costume box set featuring 158 tracks on a USB drive in 24-bit audio, and retro Zappa mask and costume.

By 1977, Frank Zappas Halloween shows were already the stuff of legends. While the shows began in the late 60s, around 1972, these monumental performances would become annual events, initially in Passaic, NJ and Chicago, IL before moving to New York City in 1974, where theyd remain. NYC (and its audience) had become a special place for Zappa and the synchronization of Halloween in NYC proved to be the perfect match. From October 28-31, 1977, Zappa and his band played six historic shows at the 3,000 capacity Palladium. All the performances were recorded with four being filmed, resulting in Zappas mammoth film project, "Baby Snakes."

Following the news that Frank Zappa will be going back on tour, the Zappa Family Trust and Universal are proud to announce that Zappas legendary Halloween residency of 1977 will be released for the first time in its entirety on October 20 via Zappa Records/UMe just in time for the 40th Anniversary of these shows. The Halloween 77 box set will include all six concerts with 158 tracks (mixed in 2016 from original vault masters) loaded onto a "Zappa's Oh Punky" fun size candy bar-shaped USB drive in 24-bit WAV audio. The package will also include a 28-page digital booklet featuring never-before-seen photos and liner notes from Vaultmeister Joe Travers, co-producer of the box alongside Ahmet Zappa, and personal firsthand accounts from many of Zappas bandmates, crew and fans who were there, including guitarist Adrian Belew, percussionist Ed Mann, keyboard tech Thomas Nordegg, tour manager Phil Kaufman, and fan Janet The Planet Walley. In the spirit of Zappas favorite season, the specially designed, limited run box will include a retro Halloween mask and costume of the maestro himself. In addition to the box set, a 3CD version will also be available featuring the entire Halloween night show plus select tracks from the October 30th gig. Fans looking for a specific show will be able to purchase the concert of their choice digitally on release day.

"This box set was a very special experience for me to work on," said Ahmet Zappa. "I wanted to make sure we honored these legendary shows, so it was important to me that this box set felt of the era. It was a blast working with our partners to create the late '70s-inspired Frank Zappa Mask and costume and the candy-shaped USB stick filled with tons of Zappa goodness. It was yet again a labor of love gathering up all the archival materials, reading notes by people who were there, and most importantly making sure the audio was up to par. All of us at Zappa Records are mighty pleased with it, and hope that fans of Frank Zappa and of Halloween will be too."

Originally scheduled for four shows from October 28-31, Zappa added two more shows due to intense popular demand, with the final total tallying six shows in four days. The full residency is presented as it happened with no overdubs or additional tinkering. The audio was remixed from scratch using fresh transfers from the master multi-track tapes, which all had to be heat treated for transfer by Travers.

The 1977 lineup of the band featured Terry Bozzio on drums, Tommy Mars and Peter Wolf on keyboards, Adrian Belew on guitar and vocals, Ed Mann on percussion and Patrick OHearn on bass; this band could really burn. Over the six shows, the ensemble averaged 25 songs per night with exciting improvisations and audience participation from "New Yorks Finest Crazy Persons" at every show, making each uniquely different. At these shows Zappa really got into the spirit with Halloween antics including bringing tech Thomas Nordegg on stage to perform some magic tricks and the bands tour manager, the "Road Mangler," Phil Kaufman, performing as the human trombone. Original Mothers bassist Roy Estrada also joined the festivities.

The songs performed at this musical marathon spanned Zappas then 11-year career with tracks from Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation, Bongo Fury, One Size Fits All, and his most recent album at the time, Zoot Allures. Many of the songs played were previously unreleased and would go on to be recorded for Zappas acclaimed 1979 album, Sheik Yerbouti, including "Flakes," "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes," "Jones Crusher," "Bobby Brown Goes Down," "City Of Tiny Lites," "Tryin' To Grow A Chin," and "Wild Love." The October 30th show notably featured the world premiere of the Grammy-nominated Disco satire "Dancin' Fool," and the one and only performance of Zappas infamous "Jewish Princess." The basic tracks from this performance were used on Sheik Yerboutis controversial studio version which ultimately attracted attention from the Anti-Defamation League who asked the FCC to ban the record from being played on the air.

Halloween 77 is not only rife with fan favorites but also includes many rare and unreleased performances and arrangements. This box set includes the first official release of the instrumental version of "Conehead." These five versions are vastly different than the song that would be included on Zappas 1981 record, You Are What You Is. The rarely played "Lather" was performed at all six shows and immediately followed by the equally rare, "Wild Love," which became a solo workout each night. This one-two punch was followed by the comedic song "Titties 'N' Beer," ultimately released on Zappa In New York, made especially memorable each time for the caustic improv dialog Zappa spewed about a then ongoing legal battle with Warner Bros. Other highlights include six extended guitar workouts of "The Torture Never Stops" and the combustible Halloween night finale of "Black Napkins."

Zappa News: There was also information about a new vinyl release of Zoot Allures on 10/20 in that news article. Since it's not directly related to Halloween 77 I'll give this its own Zappa News item:

Continuing the Zappa Family Trust and UMes Zappa on-going vinyl initiative, Zoot Allures will be reissued on 180-gram vinyl on October 20. Zoot Allures features two of Zappas signature guitar pieces, Black Napkins & Zoot Allures. The album became a fan favorite since its release in 1976. Originally conceived as a double-disc, Zappa re-edited it to a single record after pressure from his record company. This 180-gram reissue was mastered and cut directly from the analog tape master by Bernie Grundman in 2017.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Four Days Ago: King Kong (from Carnegie Hall)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFgpYC9r1uI

A tune that's going to be included as part of the "bonus section" of the 3 CD version of Halloween 77. "King Kong" almost always had great solos, as evidenced by this version.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-Three Days Ago: Stink-Foot (from Apostrophe ['])
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9FBQ1O5F8k

As can be seen above all six Halloween '77 shows had very similar setlists, but on 10/30 Frank decided to play some "rare" numbers, including this one. One of the classics, with this studio version being my favorite version of "Stink-Foot" because it includes the post-solo section. Frank never played this section when playing the song live.

"Dirty Love" was also played at that 10/30 show, following "Stink-Foot" and "The Poodle Lecture." Good song.

Song of One Hundred Fifty-One Days Ago: I Have Been in You (from Sheik Yerbouti)

Also played at that 10/30 show. "I Have Been in You" was sporadically played in '77, but it appeared much more frequently in '78. The basic track of this version was taken from a '78 performance.

Just read some quotes by Joe Travers about The Lost Episodes 2 - he said that "Amnerika (Vocal Version)" (from Frank Zappa for President) was originally supposed to be on that album, and that most of the stuff from the album "Gail already released on other projects." So yeah, looks like The Lost Episodes 2 is not going to happen, at least not the version Gail (and possibly even Frank?) was planning to release.

In case people were confused, this is what Muffin was referring to. Still not entirely sure what the "hologram" stuff at the start is a reference to - I can't find it anywhere...
