I think it's largely from diehard Smash fans? It seems like some of them think no other mascot/party brawler should be allowed to exist.

The game was not popular even among the Sony fanbase. If it was just the Smash fanbase they disliked the game, it would have done a lot better.

It probably would have done better if it was a straight up Smash clone. It could have been better but using supers to kill is stupid, especially since it takes so long to gain AP and missing is so costly.

It probably would have. They tried to be different but the game was still too similar to Smash to avoid the Smash clone label. The gameplay changes they did make were a hard sell and the only Supers kill thing turned away a lot of people. On top of that, apparently it was a huge pain to even get first party characters into the game which hurt their options for characters to put in the game.

I think it mostly got overlooked by general fans; I just think it was the Smash fanbase in particular that expressed that sort of extreme unwarranted hate for it

i think it did too for obvious reasons, most people I'm assuming said "I don't want to play this rip-off garbage." All of my friends bought this game though, we all thought it looked fun and we don't judge, we just want fun gameplay no matter who puts it out.

remember when the first trailer was released on youtube and it had a bunch of tags related to Smash?

Doesn't help that even some game journalists (not the more professional ones, but the independent YouTube ones and the like) and lets-players immediately wrote the game off too.

Take GameGrumps for instance. I'm a fan and watch their stuff now and then, but their PSASBR play was a big letdown because they went into it immediately talking it down before even playing it for being a Smash ripoff, then ignored any sort of tutorial (because they assumed it was just like Smash) and got pissed off when they did terribly, and chalked it all up to the game being bad instead of them being bad at it

+ Easy to disrupt the attacks of others
+ Left/Right triangle attack is OP
+ Each super move often claims multiple victims

- Weak aerial game
- Projectiles, which account for a decent portion of his moveset, really only have use as a defensive or set-up tactic
- A staple of my general repertoire, the downward power move, is missing from Radec

Bottom Line:
Not a great character for a person with an aggressive approach like me, but he does offer some thrills and doesn't have as many weaknesses as most characters. He seems like a perfect fit in a 2-on-2 match.

Radec's sniper is the best

It's a pain in the ass for others and great if you use it right.

Toro

+ I would have to assume with his three forms that he has more moves and variety among them than anyone
+ He's a lot of fun

- Being neither strong nor fast can make certain fights awkward and unable to settle into a groove
- With only the ninja form having any sort of attack range, he can be a struggle on stages with zoomed out cameras

Bottom Line:
One of several characters that I knew nothing about from their source material, Toro is easily the most impressive of the bunch. If not for his flaws, he would have an argument for being in the same tier as Kratos and Dante. Be that as it may, he lands only one rung lower.

Whoo there's my Toro! Nice, I'll take it. And I had no idea who he was beforehand, so there was no bias in him becoming my "main." Particularly the marshmallow form. I have no idea if it is actually a marshmallow form, but that's what I think of. It's just fun and good at building up for supers.

Jak

+ Useful at short and long range
+ Great reach

- Difficult to control, which in turn makes it harder to land attacks
- Low-tier super moves

Bottom Line:
Jak is simultaneously an asset and liability due to his versatility and challenges at managing. His super moves are weak, but he does have in his favor that his first is his best and has a decently-sized attack base for it

Sackboy

+ Kind of easy to build up AP

-I would give points for having a creative moveset if half of them weren't useless

Bottom Line:
At first, I was confounded about my ability to classify my feelings about Sackboy mere pros and cons. Then, I realized that Sackboy was that much of a neutral character.

Jak is pretty underpowered, but he's still my #1 main. I think his Lvl 3 is one of the best in the game (also I love how his specials are representative of his games: Lvl 1. is the blue eco pad from J&D, 2 is Dark Eco blast from Jak 2 and 3 is Light Jak from Jak 3. Little details like that are a large part of the reason I love the game as much as I do).

Sackboy used to be OP too. People complained because his cake and jelly got too much AP, allowing for spamming, so they both got nerfed. Also, his Lvl 3 was downright broken. It was the only one in the game with the potential to get over 6 kills due to how long it ran and how easy it was to abuse in a small stage.

Sly Cooper

+ Plenty of moves that momentarily incapacitate characters
+ Great super moves
+ Moves around extremely well and the paraglider provides some added dimension
+ While not the only character to claim this, but he has no weaknesses to any particular type of opponent

+/- Defensive maneuvers in theory (invisibility, lack of roll) favor playing against humans but are a non-factor against AI

- Cane doesn't pack much of a wallop

Bottom Line:
Sly is a Top 5 VG character for me (Kratos also might be), so there is some bias that is impossible to shake off. However, he is an excellent character in this game that would be up there with Kratos and Dante if he had a bit more oomph in his attacks.

I somewhat enjoyed the game for what it was. The forced Super Kills was a costly mistake and all criticism related to that is justly deserved, but I have to give the developers credit for integrating characters into the game and making them feel like they were ripped straight from their games into this.

What I mean by that is when you play Super Smash Bros., Mario doesn't act and move anywhere near like he does in the Super Mario games. They (HAL Labs makes them right?) had to make sacrifices to create a better sense of balance in the games. In PSABR, characters like Sly, Jak, Kratos, and Sackboy feel exactly like they do in the games that they are were originally from. It resulted in a more unbalanced game, but I commend the execution.

Afters playing 200+ rounds in various modes, I STILL haven't played the stages from inFAMOUS or Jak and Daxter.

He is a pain in the ass to fight though on higher difficulties, put him on max AI level and fight him, he will be non-stop invisible and drive you nuts with cheap hits.

The infamous stage is nothing special, its rather annoying to be honest, it's basically the ice climbers stage from SSB. But the Jak and Daxter stage is pretty fun actually. Good vertical movement and plenty of platforms.

I wasn't particular impressed with stages as a whole. They didn't really put a lot of thought into the design itself and focused on how crossovers would affect them. Thus, my favorite would have to be the Locoroco one since they actually tried. Dreamscape and Hades would probably slot right behind it.
