The lore behind Iron Golem was interesting. Too bad the boss fight itself was disappointing difficulty-wise. Design-wise you really can't go wrong with towering armored beings.

I didn't truly appreciate this fight until New Game Plus when I was going for the platinum, but fighting these guys before you're "supposed" to is an incredible challenge. You're on a clock, and if you're stuck fighting more than one king at the same and one pops off camera then good luck. You're screwed. But it's not the typical "clock ran out" video game nonsense, because you technically could still turn things around.

This isn't necessarily an overly difficult or complex fight, but the atmosphere is incredible. Just reaching these guys means tempting the rules of death, then you reach the void and it's like "nah dude, there's giant ancient undead guys here ready to slice you to bits". The whole thing is set up great, and you get the full tension on NG+. Top tier fight all the way.

Prof
The f***ing atmosphere in this fight is so f***ing amazing. You need the special ring just to survive. The only thing you can see is blackness and the enemies. Again they are just difficult enough for how the series is.

Tazzy
Lame DPS test. Yeah, it’s difficult without being overbearing, but that doesn’t change the fact that the fight is mostly reliant on how much damage you deal. Not a whole lot of real skill involved. They have a bunch of attacks that I suck at dodging, and if you can’t finish one off quickly, you’ll have to fight another at the same time. It’s also lame that there are sometimes more than four in a battle. That always bothered me.

Hit or miss level. I like the atmosphere and suspense of crawling through tight, dark corridors, but leeches are annoying, and enemy variety overall is pretty bland. It spices things up with the crazy, hard-to-navigate bottom floor filled with Basilisks, but that can be bypassed entirely completely by accident. I do like that they added an NPC invader though. It’s a nice touch for offline players.

Axl
I hate this area because of the ****ing Basilisks with the ability to curse you.

Ulti
Sewer levels are the actual worst thing.

functions as a gatekeeper to the DLC areas. no bulls*** beforehand, just a hard as f*ck boss.

Tazzy
This is just an absurdly fun battle. The way It moves and attacks are fun to dodge and punish. The random poisoning was a little lame, but poison in Dark Souls 1 isn’t really that bad either way.

Prof
his is a fairly awesome boss with an appropriate level of difficulty but… the actual arena just doesn’t feel that much at home to the boss. Oh well.

This is the true weed out zone. The Asylum Demon and the Gargoyles may turn more people away, but if you can beat Blighttown- then more than likely you already have the mindset to beat the rest of the game.

Tazzy
God, what to say here? I have so much, but don’t want to ramble on in this kind of topic. The trek down is brilliant to me. From created fantastic imagery, making you descend to the depths of a hell-like landscape, only to rise up to the heavens (Anor Londo). I like that falling is a constant hazard, but the enemies aren’t designed to push you off or anything. Generally speaking, it’s pretty much just your own carelessness that causes death. I love how they carefully placed items in locations that show the player how many ways you’re able to traverse the level, goading you into taking risky jumps and drops. It’s just such a creative level that seems to be brilliantly designed…. But then you have the toxic needle dudes. They put them in unreasonable spots, give them an absurd aggro range, and there’s absolutely no break time where you can safely walk in their range. Sure, they don’t respawn, but they’re just annoying as hell. Plus there’s the constant dips in framerate, which make the more precise points far too sketchy. Then you have the bottom part, which is essentially a massive poison pool. Not as big as 5-2, but still far too big, and empty at that. Plus, without the Rusted Iron Ring, it’s just a pain in the ass to work through. The only real interesting thing to find is an optional area that is absolutely atrocious, so it’s not really worth exploring. So yeah, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship here.

Axl
The drop in framerate really kills this area in the rankings. Otherwise it is not as bad as people claim it to be.

Ulti
Does this really need explaining? Every single inch of Blighttown sucks.

f*** this bastard and f*** his acid attack you need to dodge to not lose your weapon. But in reality it is pretty great in terms of one where you learn well from doing it multiple times and that works really well for the series. Plus you know atmosphere.

Tazzy
That sweet, sweet art design. The Souls games are so great at creating horrifying monstrosities without having to rely on making them simply look gross, if that makes any sense. I don’t feel disgusted when looking at the Gaping Dragon, rather I feel frightened. What could have possibly caused this creature to have it’s torso distorted in such a way? What kind of powers does a creature like this hold? It sparks curiosity in its grotesqueness, which is why I love so many of the designs in this franchise. The battle itself is always fun. This guy was much larger than anything you’d faced in the game at that point, so the sheer scale makes things feel a lot more exciting. It’s not hard once you know how to pace yourself, though the attacks hit pretty damn hard. Fun fact: I did this boss on my first playthrough while cursed, so it was a pretty rough going, since every attack killed me in one hit.

Simple, but so good. Usually in a game the buildup doesn't lead to something worthy of the build, but Kiln exceeds it. The ghosts of Gwyn's army wander the stairs of the intro, and the last vestige of his kingsguard stands between you and the finish line. The only thing that matches the atmosphere here is how damn depressing it is.

Angel
If you really think about it the map is basically just a straight line with a boss at the end, but it's probably the most iconic area.

Axl
Too short to be ranked any higher but it made for an epic feel leading up to the Final Boss

This is a really nice introduction to the game. The first two boss fights are relatively easy but this one definitely gave me a lot of trouble. It was a beautiful proper introduction to the game much like the Undead Parish is to the entire game.

Tazzy
I feel like Demon’s Souls had such easy, exploitable battles, so I never really felt stuck on them. Dark Souls, however, felt like it had a ton of points where I felt helpless. Maybe that’s why I hold the game so dear, since finally accomplishing these tasks felt so rewarding, and the sheer quantity of those experiences just kinda stacked onto each other. I’m rambling. Anyway, the Bell Gargoyles were my first challenge like this. It didn’t help that the run up felt so brutal at the time, but 2v1 with one of them breathing fire while you fought another one just felt so brutal. It really presents this kind of overwhelming battle in a great way, as you have time to learn the attack patterns of the first gargoyle, then apply it to two of them at once, both with lower health. It’s certainly not the best boss that uses more than one enemy, but it’s still quite good. Feels pretty satisfying to effortlessly never get hit by these guys anymore.

Ulti
Decent throwback to the Maneaters, without being the obnoxious similar fight that was in Dark Souls 2.

Canonically I refuse to fight Priscilla just like I would love to do with Sif(but sadly can%u2019t). The invisibility is a really good challenge with the way you have to watch for the footprints. Overall a great fight.

Angel
The invisibility mechanic makes the fight challenging to figure out and keeps you on your toes.

Ulti
I probably have this higher than I should, but the lore is just too good here.

Tazzy
Once the invisibility gimmick is figured out, this becomes an easy strafe-to-the-left victory. The invisibility is admittedly really cool though, and tracking where she is based on her footprints is neat. She's also the #1 Dark Souls 1 waifu, fight me.

Best atmosphere of any fight in this game by a mile, and it gets hilarious when Nito summons a million things that could legitimately screw you up before knocking them all away and giving you an opening to murder him. It gets me every time. This dude is the god of death in Dark Souls, yet through all those years it doesn't occur to him to actually let his henchmen do the dirty work for him. It's just summon stuff, knock them all away, oh crap I'm getting stabbed now. It's too funny.

Tazzy
Nito’s design is the closest thing to perfection ever. He’s a giant skeleton made up of smaller skeletons, and wields a massive scythe made of more skeletons. The fight is pretty simple. Nito has extremely slow attacks, so it’s pretty easy to read and then get hits on. The real challenge comes from his skeleton minions that try to gank you, but Nito’s attacks take care of them well enough that they can be ignored. Hate that you take fall damage before beginning the fight though. That’s lame.

Prof
Them skulls. This is another one that is just so awesome due to the atmosphere of the fight and how incredibly well done it is in terms of being just difficult enough but not to the point of frustration.

Forest areas are always nice aesthetically to me. Darkroot Garden does some cool things. Half of it is typically not gonna be seen until after the midway point. The first bit has a really cool section with all these giant stone knights. Makes it feel like you’re going through a truly forbidden area. Exploring that part is always so intense. Then you have the forest of NPCs later, where you can join a covenant and invade worlds to fight with the NPCs. Never got into PvP, and I think Dark Souls II refined the formula of that sort of covenant, but it’s an awesome idea either way.

Angel
Darkroot Gardin/Basin and the Royal Wood are all the same thing in my mind.

currently going through dark souls 2 because of the return to drangleic event so most things will be fresh in my mind for that ranking! probably not going to finish it though since there'll be a return to bloodborne event starting this weekend, and i actually love that game unlike this one which is just "pretty good".

also, wow didn't know i was such an outlier with darkroot garden. it feels like just a lot of narrow hallways with wide spaces to me, and only the stone guardians make for interesting combat encounters. the npc covenant members are neat the first time through, but not at all engaging the nth time around, especially after grinding them multiple times.

I was doing Return to Drangleic at first and even bought SotFS on PS4. Then I got to Lost Bastille and started sucking hard and decided I wasn't really in the mood for Dark Souls. Hopefully that changes once the new DLC comes out though!

Regardless, my memory for these games is pretty astounding, so it all still feels pretty fresh. I am a bit worried that the Aldia fight might screw some people out of participation though.

The original version did an update to include him, but the issue isn't integrity, rather the fact that they actually won't be allowed if they can't rank everything. So if someone played before SotFS released and never revisited, they'd be left out. I'd still leave areas open, however.

From hasn’t really been able to make the most spectacular dragon fights, but this is one of those rare instances where they succeeded. Kalameet is the DLC’s optional boss, and you basically have to do some weird sidequesting in order to fight him fairly. His attacks are fun, with lots of variety. Just an all around great battle.

I'd rate him higher if chopping off his tail wasn't so damn annoying. But when it comes to dragons, I can't think of another one in the series being set up better than this guy. If you try fighting him before he gets shot down, he annihilates you. Then he gets shot down and he annihilates you anyway. His breath might be the coolest graphical effect I've seen in the series, and as an Orzhov fan it really stuck with me. Really good optional boss that stands out from the rest of the DLC, even if I rank one of the DLC bosses higher than him.

Prof
Fighting Kalameet is an awesome fight against a dragon. I love having to get Hawkeye Gough’s help to snipe him down. However compared to the bosses above I feel like the actual boss room kinda fails to have that perfect atmosphere they do. The valley doesn’t feel like the home of a dragon enough for it to be any higher.

the ability to parry him makes for interesting lore implications, but does make the fight a little easy.

Axl
Amazing final battle after the disappointment in Demon's Souls. The atmosphere and feeling is matched only by Dark Souls III's final boss.

Tazzy
Honestly, From nails the set-up perfectly here. The road leading up to Gwyn is bleak and void of life. You walk into his dark, depleted chamber, and he uses the rest of his energy to protect the FIrst Flame. No cutscene or anything. Just a somber piano melody backing the actions of a man who has lost everything. Shame the actual fight is pretty simple.

Ulti
Good lore, bad final boss. You either parry him to death or just up your fire resistance and block everything. Dodge his grab move and you're set. Too simple, but I give him top ten out of pure respect for his lore.

Prof
For the final boss of the game this feels anticlimatic in its difficulty which is really disappointing. Parry>Stab is a bit too easy with him. I really don’t think he should be parryable. The actual atmosphere is f***ing great so that did end up helping even if I found it a bit too easy.

Scariest level in the game for sure! Wandering into here at the beginning of the game was intimidating as hell, and for good reason! I love how it teased this at you so quickly when it’s a late-game area. The ghosts do get a bit much at times, but they’re not that hard. The real challenge comes after draining the water. Darkwraiths are some of the most intimidating foes in the game, and the way theyt blend with the environment cranks the intensity up even more. This is easily the best post-Anor Londo area.

Manus is easily the most aggressive boss in the game. Even battles with Artorias and Gwyn don’t feel as constricted as this one. I guess I can see why some would think this is a bad thing, but I love how helpless it made me feel, and finding the right times to heal was vital. Manus goes all out from the get-go, with fast and deadly attacks that can lead to devastating combos. He has a massive arsenal to choose from, and they’re all a ton of fun to work against. When I first played, I thought his massive combo was impossible to defend, under the assumption it was a grab attack. I just happened to accidentally block it once, and because I was so good at dodging everything else, this became a cakewalk. Still, it’s a great way to end the DLC.

Prof
This is another one with just a f***ing amazing atmosphere. It is a bit more difficult than I would like though which is why he falls out of the top 10. I ended up having to summon Sif to beat him which was pretty awesome though so that part was nice.

Ulti
I feel like the DLC could have ended with a better fight, truth be told. This guy was "okay".

Probably the best lore in the series.

Watching the creeping corrosion as you slowly go farther down is atmosphere on steroids.

Amazing Chest Ahead

Another fight where it just has such an amazing atmosphere combined with just enough difficulty for me to still like it.

Tazzy
Quelaag was the first boss with a pretty diverse moveset. She has sword attacks that lead into combos, fire and lava attacks, a jump attack, and even an AoE! Also will coat the arena with lava at times, forcing the player to be extra cautious. Man, I’m just now realizing how clever Dark Souls was with it’s boss arenas. Even the more standard ones had some kind of mechanic that forced the player to understand their surroundings. Chalk another reason to love this game up! Anyway, Quelaag never really gave me a ton of trouble. I feel like, at this point, I was starting to play pretty well. She’s just a lot of fun each playthrough. Like, I said, variety is always fun.

Angel
One of the first really hard bosses, but that might be due to low levels because of pathing in most playthroughs.

all the talk about gwyn being easy because of parrying always has me the tiniest bit salty because i didn't know about that at all when i first beat the game. had a dex build then and always two-handed my weapons without ever really learning how to parry. just trying to dodge roll that entire fight was incredibly hard because he barely let up, and he'd destroy me in 3-4 hits. so that whole lore perspective of him being this pathetic shell of a god was totally lost on me too, because he kicked my ass for almost 2 hours straight before i eventually just got extremely good at dodging every attack and poking him at every opportunity to the point that i barely got hit by the time i beat him. learning later on after going online that the one trick was parrying and doing just that on my ng+ run was partly cathartic and partly infuriating.

so yeah in the spirit of all this saltiness, props to you if you legit figured out parrying him was the key all by yourself, but if you looked it up or got told that strategy because you also never parried regularly before that fight, raspberry sounds to you!
