getting 1 or 2 months of access once a year isn't the worst thing in the world. there's some cool games on the service - all the Mass Effect games, both Mirrors Edges, PVZ Garden Warfare 2, Peggle, Battlefront, 10 hours of Battlefield 1 (let's be honest this is as much as you'll play).

hoo boy the animations and the delivery on some of the lines for this game ... VERY rough. surprised that people freaked out about that horizon scene but are giving mass effect a pass for main story stuff being so weird and disjointed!

i mean, the other mass effects had the problem with the animations but i always thought the line delivery and the job they did patching it all together worked really well. from what i'm seeing this looks fairly ... rushed?

there are two major major issues here

1. the animations are among the worst i've seen in any game of note

2. whoever stitched all the voice lines together did a real bad job. the voice lines themselves are OK, but they are put together extremely poorly

every single scene that includes human interaction -- watching Giant Bomb's stream and they're playing on a PS4 Pro. single player, not multiplayer.

the other races look fine. all the human females look dead inside and all the human males look stoned. none of the eyebrows animate. there are a few scenes where the depth of field blur is applied to the wrong thing. this one woman's face got blurrier and blurrier every time it went back to her, like they were trying a gag movie thing but they obviously weren't. the hands are terrible looking, the faces don't emote well at all. the hair has massive seaming issues and shadows are jumping all over the place on stationary faces

everything about interacting with humans in dialogue is horrendous, looks like "bad steam game asset flip" level. worse than the past mass effect games.

this is all from the GB stream I'm watching. now he's controlling the character and shooting and it looks GREAT. then people start talking again.

also whoever stitched the voice lines together, for turians especially, really f***ed something up. whatever they did in post to add the effect to it, they also f***ed it up real good

I guess after so many hits in the first three months of this year one of them was bound to screw up

i mean

the game can still be great overall. the gameplay looks very fun. i'm not really interested in the story yet, but it could hook me. it's more than in a game that puts so much focus on character interactions, that aspect of the game should just be ... better. much better.

the voice stuff is much worse with turians than anything else, but the first female human who gives you a mission (i forget who this was) also had weird starting and stopping with the voice

So real talk, a lot of people are making some pretty solid looking male Ryders that I'm tempted to do a male run through first. I hated that you couldn't make a decent looking male shep and basically had to use the default.
