Originality and design are pretty big things for me, so even though I like Blue Smelter, I was a bit disappointed overall.

Shame to see Blue Smelter ranked so low. Such an amazing battle and the only thing he loses points for is being a reskin.

I feel like this was the first dragon fight in the series where it was a one on one battle to the death instead of "shoot a million arrows at it", or an obstacle course, or "hey can you shoot this thing down for me bruh?". You show up, and you fight a dragon on foot. No tricks, no BS. It was so good. Usually I downgrade when a boss is a regular enemy later but I never got bored of fighting these things and then boosting the bonfire effect to fight them again.

Tazzy
First time fighting I just thought it felt like I was fighting a typical no-respawn enemy. Then I got to the next area and found out that’s basically what I was doing.

Maria
I think this battle is fairly disliked but I enjoy it. reminds me of how a real dragon would fight if you were trapped in a cage with it. the fact that it's not difficult is what brings it down greatly, since while the flying away is realistic it also makes the battle take longer. and taking longer is not fun if you aren't being challenged.

Metal
Dunno why but don't like this fight much. It felt a bit like fighting a giant parakeet.

Getting here alone is worth it being near the bottom. Put a ladder in the fucking well instead of forcing people to jump in. Such a stupid design decision.

and then Ulti realizes there is an NPC who will put ladders into the well for you

and then Ulti further realizes that jumping into the well is the preferred strategy over using ladders because it's a skill you can master and exploit, as all good games reward the ability to master skills and learning the optimal paths through areas

recorded some video for my Bloodborne playthrough series and decided to make a short clip for you guys since I was recording stuff anyway. here is the 'direction canceling' tech I referred to in the previous topic:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9gLqBfQ_qI

there are no bloodborne spoilers in this vid. I'm simply standing in the workshop attacking with my weapon.

Just a quick example of 'Direction Canceling,' a useful tech that can be performed in Bloodborne and other Souls games.

This is achieved by holding the direction stick in the opposite direction of the player between a first and second attack on a combo, or while running, or while charging, or after backstepping, or for a transformation attack. Basically most situations you can think of.

The character will do an instant pivot and attack in the opposite direction they were originally facing. This can even give the illusion that you are aiming your weapon one way before it swings around and hits the other way, giving you a slight edge in PvP. This will vary from weapon to weapon so be sure to experiment and learn your movesets.

the animations in bloodborne look slick and incredibly beautiful while the animations in dark souls 2

well

they aren't so good when it comes to stuff like this

but the mechanics are pretty much the same.

basically what I'm saying is that players are just as capable of doing it as enemies. the only difference is that enemies tend to have longer wind-up times on their attack. so when they raise their weapon and then turn in another direction before swinging it... yes, you are capable of doing that too. maybe I should have slowed down the video above but I think if you watch carefully you can see her raise the club and then turn the other way before swinging it down.

also I have no idea why it slipped my mind at the time but doing it with charge attacks is the most obvious way to show off the tech. this is especially apparent because it's very similar to the 'slow wind up before attacking' that enemies in dark souls 2 have.

oh well. you can basically try it for yourselves if you're still curious about how the mechanic works. it's definitely something that is useful to know.

bonus tech; you can start a combo chain not locked on, and then lock onto an enemy. this will cause your weapon to auto track and pivot in the direction of the enemy on that second hit. essentially you can auto-guide the direction canceling tech if you know how to do it. takes a bit of practice but it's insanely useful in some encounters.

The best of the "Challenge Areas" from the DLC. I like how there are multiple ways to proceed through. It can be a little frustrating to have to clear such a difficult area to reach such a difficult boss but I think, with the concept of "Challenge Area" in mind, that frustration is just another oppressive element to break the player's spirit. Only those with a strong will and finely honed skills can succeed here.

Axl
The only Memory area I remember clearly.

Tazzy
Easily the best challenge area, but it’s easy to be better than utter garbage.

Angel
I'm not a fan of the memory sequences, but this one gets a bump up on the list because of the room at the end.

Ulti
These memory areas all suck.

Really cool to me. I like the concept of two different attackers sharing movement, and having to learn how to deal with each separately, but it’s pretty damn easy. The rising water is an awesome idea as well, but it’s a shame it takes so long for it to be a problem.

Ulti
Kind of a boring fight, but still fun. My top 21 is all bosses I enjoyed, which is a pretty good number. 21 out of 40.

Maria
an interesting but not too challenging boss. he gave me a bit of trouble in SL1. damage just isn't high enough to kill him quickly and dodging starts to suffer once the water rises. yes, the water rises during this fight. you probably never noticed because you killed him so fast.

the boss which taught me about the importance of camera control. it will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason. I feel DeS and DaS1 never punished you enough for failing to master the camera controls, but DaS2 really went out of its way to make sure you learned them.

Tazzy
Eh, I think they’re lot of fun to fight on their own, but having to do three at once just kinda kills it for me. They aren’t really that fun to balance around.

Ulti
I would have put this much lower if you couldn't cheese your way into isolating the first one. Multiple targets, bad camera, thus bad boss.

What a great boss. This guy is Nightmare from Devil May Cry, but with a workable camera. I have a thing for "the floor is telling you you're about to die" type bosses, and this guy is the best one at doing it. It's so fun.

Axl
Other than storyline reasons, Aldia is a largely unnecessary final boss fight. He is not too bad but not anything special either. I vastly prefer Nashandra as the final boss and it should have stayed that way.

Maria
aldia adds a ton of lore to the game which is the only reason he is ranked this high. his fight is fairly easy but it can be epic if you do it as part of the boss marathon.

Tazzy
God, I didn’t like any of this game’s final battles. Stationary bosses are boring as all hell, and you only get a brief period to attack him at a time, so it just takes so damn long, and all I really wanna do is pretend Darklurker was the final boss.

So I actually don't like this place. Most playthroughs I just sprint through it so I don't get sucked into online play with it, but being able to trap other players in your own world and use the environment to kill them is a really cool and unique twist on online play. It's a shame more people didn't use it though.

Worst of the good areas. I might have ranked it higher if it didn't have what might be the worst boss in video game history in it.

I like vendrick as a character but I really don't even consider him to be a boss. for one thing the lifeless husk you fight is not vendrick. vendrick is already long hollowed at that point. secondly, it doesn't even feel like a real battle. you just hack away at the thing for a while until it does. more like chopping down a tree than fighting an enemy.

It’s a big spider that shoots lasers, which is badass. I also like the multiple heads mechanic.

Metal
This fight is bad but so cool at the same time. The smaller spiders really save this fight. They add so much. The big spider itself is kind of awful. But nice reward at the end: Curved Dragon Greatsword. My personal favorite weapon

Axl
I'm really not the biggest fan of Spider bosses.

Angel
I'm fine with spiders, what I'm not fine with is a boss that's invulnerable on most of it's body. Couple that with the fact that it's heads can fall off before you reach half health in some cases, making the boss completely invincible, and this boss ranks quite low on my list.

Ulti
Multiple targets, infinite enemies, and the most annoying run from bonfire to boss in the entire game should you die. What could possibly go wrong?

Decent opening area. But it's too short to be ranked any higher

Tazzy
Good enough tutorial, but pretty dull-looking. I do enjoy that it encourages you to come back when you’re stronger, though the reward is just getting trolled.

Maria
Like most tutorial areas in the Souls games it is adequate. I actually think this is the most cryptic one, which is neat in a way. Players are definitely left on their own. If they choose not to explore they might be punished... but if they are very familiar with the franchise you can run straight through and ignore the side areas. This is a lot like the overall design of Dark Souls 2, so I approve. I probably should have ranked it higher now that I'm taking that into consideration since it is pretty cool for the tutorial to be a microcosm of the entire game.

Dark Souls II had some pretty bad enemy design IMO, which really sucks since the artistic direction is among my favorite things in the franchise. Demon of Song is probably the most creative design in the game, so I’m probably a bit biased. The fight itself isn’t really too great, but I love that look.

Ulti
I should probably rank this higher but it gave me terrible Blaster Master flashbacks. I also thought the water was bottomless and did the entire fight on the edge.

Maria
the last of the really, really boring bosses. to me this is actually possibly the easiest boss in the game aside from maybe Vendrick and Covetous. but at least he looks kind of cool?

This level has pretty cool progression. The camp is really nice aesthetically, and the transition into the beah is pretty cool. I always liked the descent. It’s fun picking off the mages and looking for secret pathways, though the inability to return to the top without a bonfire kind of blows. Spiders get a bit too ganky at times, but it’s a pretty solid area overall.

Maria
A complex level that I think is designed well, but I can't say it's as much fun as some of the ones above it. The fact that you can't backtrack once you start is the same issue I had with Belfry Sol, although this level is just overall better.

I normally like "spider world" stuff, but this was pure garbage from start to finish, and to top it all off the bonfire is no where near the boss.

tseldora is a truly confusing area in the sense that it doesn't fit with the rest of the game design wise. dark souls 2 is all about short levels with more frequent checkpoints and the ability to warp between them at will. normally you have bonfires that can lead right to the boss provided you uncover the shortcut or know exactly where you're going.

then you have... this. a level where not only is it long and complex compared to most other levels in the game but you cannot backtrack and there is no shortcut to the boss. the quickest route actually involves starting at the bonfire which is further away distance-wise. the whole thing is very out of place and not intuitive.

while I do enjoy this level I also think it fails from a design perspective, especially at meshing with the rest of the game. this is one area where I would not criticize ulti (and others) saying the design is bad.

An easy boss fight, sure, but the fact that he rips his own arm off and uses it as a weapon is really unique.

Tazzy
Pretty standard fare, but the lore is pretty solid. Decent enough first boss, but still feels kinda tutorialish, despite you having gone through an entire area already.

Maria
not really challenging but I guess it's just that first boss nostalgia which carries him. also the lore.

Love the map, it looks really cool and there's lots of hidden goodies to find by exploring, but I hate navigating through it. It got better with updates/SotFS when they moved the enemies around to make it less annoying, but it's still not my favorite area to run through.

Axl
A b**** of an area to get through with all those ****ing mages spamming their projectiles. Easily the cheapest area I have encountered in the entire series with regards to enemy placement. The area is drop dead stunning to look at though. Which helps it greatly in the rankings.

Maria
his level has a lot going on. It takes all of the positive points that I like about DS2 level design and rolls them into one package. There is literally a quick path you can take if you wish to proceed, but you might have difficulty even there if you haven't mastered the level. There is a lot to do around the edges of the map if you are feeling bold and wish to explore. The level of challenge is very high, driven mostly by the fact that it forces you to play differently than you would normally play. This area is literally HATED so I would not be surprised if it winds up at the bottom. Which is a shame since it's actually so well designed.

Tazzy
Yeah, I do melee builds exclusively.

ah yes the shrine of amana. the one level that rides almost exclusively on its aesthetic to rank highly for me. i appreciate the mechanics of it as well, but it stands precariously on that line between challenging and frustrating. and i hear it was worse in the vanilla version!

when the game was released there was a glitch where the mages would identify the player and begin firing projectiles at them as soon as they enter the area. they would actually be sniping you constantly for the entire level before you could even see them -- like, they were outside of the draw distance of your current game state and had not even been rendered yet.

uh, anyway, this was quickly patched and people still complain about it to this day.

As much as the game kinda annoys me a lot of times, I feel like it really did try some extremely unique ideas. Some flopped, while others were pretty damn incredible. This is a great boss to me. The intensity of running to kill the Necromancers as you slowly progress to the end is so great., The actual fight isn’t as good as the first phase, but it’s still nice.

Axl
My favorite gimmick boss battle in the entire series.

This is the place that made me appreciate Blighttown in the original Dark Souls a lot more. Sure, it can be annoying to navigate, but the idea of having to light torches on your path to be able to see better is a really fun concept.

Maria
The ultimate representation of Dark Souls 2's great design. I love this level and it's only halfway up the list. That's just amazing. I know it's gonna rank fairly low so I'll just give my explanation here that way it is presented early on. Dark Souls 2 is the best game in the series when it comes to game mastery and speed running. Almost every level is designed in a way that it can provide a challenge and take time -- if you choose to explore, if you are unfamiliar with the level. But they can all be mastered in such fantastic ways that I'm constantly blown away. You can take a 5 minute long level of wandering through the dark in suspended wooden platforms with no clear sense of direction and multiple vertical layering... then cut it down to a 40 second run while leaping across platforms through the dark. Seriously brilliant. No other game in the entire franchise rewards level mastery to the extent that Dark Souls 2 does.

Tazzy
It’s like the good parts of Blighttown mixed with the bad parts of Tomb of the Giants, which leads to me having a weird view on it. I think the design is brilliant, and the descent further and further into filth is really cool (Though done better in Dark Souls 1 imo). But verticality and darkness don’t really mix very well, and it’s honestly a bit stressful to explore. I mean, that is the point, but I just never feel like I’m enjoying myself when I do this place.

Ulti
It's like they learned nothing from how fucking terrible Blighttown was.

Axl
Oh. My. God. This area sucks. It is like Tomb of the Giants and Blighttown put together. Not to mention it is a ****ing long one. It may very well be the worst area in the entire series.

Follows all the same top principles of DS2 level design. I think of the levels without phenomenal visual design, this is probably among the best. It was hard to place it since most of the levels with top tier level design also have top tier visual design. Ultimately it got into the top 10 despite having a fairly mediocre aesthetic.

Ulti
It's not Sen's Fortress, but it's still pretty good!

Tazzy
I’m probably the only person who’s gonna hate this level but it pisses me off so much. The entire thing is a battle against poison. Yeah it has enemies, but they’re nothing compared to how forced the status effect is. Hell, some of the enemies only exist to poison you! Ignoring the enemies that actually have poison attacks, you have pots scattered around the level that will poison you if they break within your vicinity. Enemies typically get aggroed in this range and will break the pots while attacking, since many are, of course, ranged. It’s somewhat alleviated as they put pots next to the enemies as well, so you can poison them. That’s actually pretty cool! But it's such a minor happenstance that it hardly makes up for anything. And then it pulls dumb shit like hiding secrets behind pots and the random ass windmill thing that I still don’t understand mechanically, and it’s just annoying. It's also where the world design goes to complete shit, which was my favorite part of the first game, so that blows too. I did like how they put items in really unsafe areas, just daring you to risk falling to your death. Reminded me of how Blighttown placed items.

A lot of people unfairly compare her to Quelaag due to the design, but the mechanics of the fight aren’t even close. I really enjoy this one, personally. All of her attacks are pretty fun to dodge, and I like the bit of magic mixed in.

The closest Dark Souls has gotten to being Halloween Town, and I say that with love. The Evil Simon Belmont enemies put it over the edge for me. This place was amazing from start to finish.

Tazzy
Doesn’t get as swarmy as NMW, but it’s still enough to be a problem. Shame because I really like the aesthetics of the area. It just isn’t any fun.

Maria
This is the only area which completely breaks the cardinal rule of Dark Souls 2 level design. Instead of being open to exploration but quick to pass with mastery, the area is clogged with filler. No matter how good you get at the game this area becomes a chokepoint that slows you do as you're forced to run back and forth up and around a hill, along a cliffside, and god it's just so boring and frustrating. The forced long stretches of walking with not much happening is one of my only complaints with the Soulsbourne series, and Dark Souls 2 is the one game that has this problem the least. But Hunstman's Copse is like one of the worst examples, and it really stands out amidst all the other levels in the game. Bad. Bad. Bad.
