Yep -- grew up in MD so I knew several people who've made that trip. An old friend of mine did it after her father passed away from cancer -- it was apparently a very transformative time for her.

Appalachia is some of the prettiest terrain in the States IMO

I live in the Appalachian mountains, but I'm not sure I know anyone who's hiked the trail.

There's a certain appeal to dropping out of society for 7-8 months. But...just how safe is it? And what the hell do you do about water?

Did you listen to the Joe Rogan podcast that was just about a guy who did this? I think his name was Chris Cage.

It sounds pretty cool. I don't know anyone who has done it. I live in Oregon, which the Pacific Crest Trail goes through, so I've heard about these three epic trails (the two mentioned + the Continental Trail) before. Maybe I would do the Pacific Crest Trail at some point in my life.

If you did listen to the podcast, the only thing that pissed me off was that when he was describing the Pacific Crest Trail he was like "Yeah, it goes from Mexico to Canada, through California" and then ended right there... No mention of Oregon or Washington! WTF! It's not always fucking about California. This is just like when Californians talk about I-5 and leave out that it also goes through Oregon and Washington.
