It's just an upgraded Xbox. Microsoft I believe is trying to go towards a system like you have with smart phones. New upgrades keep coming out but you can still use your current device just fine until far down the line.

I have a gaming PC. I also have an Xbox one in living room as a multimedia device that is great with friends. I wish Microsoft didn't kill many Kinect features to appease paranoid turbovirgins though

I like it too. For some reason a lot of "gamers" can't seem to grasp the beauty of having choices. It doesn't matter how much better PC gaming is or how many console games are also on PC. People still prefer or also enjoy consoles because that's their choice.

To be fair, a console is still cheaper than a new PC. If you are solely after playing games, getting a new console every 4 years is going to be a lot more 'cost effective' than trying to keep up with PC hardware.

AT&T / Verizon / Sprint / T-Mobile / etc is getting your money one way or another. Maybe you're not getting the latest iPhone or Galaxy phone and as a result the phone is free, but then you're locked into a contract for 2 years where you're going to end up likely paying far more than the cost of the phone.

my point is that you're always going to have to pay for the devices you want, it's just a matter of if you want a new phone or a beefy new xbox or what

Getting the Scorpio's specs in 2013 would have been way too expensive. They have to make consoles affordable at the start in order to actually have a userbase. Plus they have to use hardware that actually exists two or three years prior to the console's launch so developers have something to go by when developing launch titles.
