You're being thick dude, there were much better ways for United to handle this. They could have continued to offer the compensation at a higher rate. But instead they decided it was head bashing time. Who is being more unreasonable, the guy who wants to continue to sit in the seat he paid for, or the company that would rather have someone assaulted than pay out an amount over $800 ?

don't get me wrong, united was way out of line, and handled that situation about as incorrectly as you can.

it was an incredible showdown of stupid running headfirst into stupid. both parties acted like idiots, but united will be the one to pay, rightfully so, ok?

Again, lets realize that this is the only logical conclusion to their practice of overbooking.

It is possible for BOTH parties to be wrong. Not one fucking person, including ziggi, is saying united deserves a free pass on this. What he IS saying is that the dude made a complete ass out of himself and acted like a child, which is true.

It's bad press for united, and deservedly so, but if I was this guy's friend I would rag on him for the rest of his life over how he handled it. Could have done a lot more harm to the company if he'd handled it differently.

So now changing a quote on gamefaqs is equivalent to yelling and screaming and flailing like a child throwing a tantrum?

Seriously, I know you all have a hate boner for ziggi, but you are REALLY reaching on this one and it makes you look pretty dumb.

Read the contract that you are agreeing to when you buy a ticket with united and you will see that indeed he was NOT within his rights to refuse.

Don't like it? Good. You shouldnt. The solution is to either buy a private jet, don't fly, or just put up with it.

You'd rag on the doctor? For how HE handled it?

I can't believe this is even a debate. What did he the doctor do wrong at all? He paid for that ticket, he had every right to be on that plane. And the only reason they were making him get off is because United screwed up their booking and wanted to have their employees on the plane for a different flight. This was entirely their screw-up, they should have owned it and put their employees on a different flight, not forced customers out of theirs.

And how exactly did he act childish? At all? OP keeps saying he was "kicking and screaming" but we must not have watched the same video. He was on the phone with his lawyer when their security agent knocked him old cold. I'm not sure what you wanted him to do here, just bend over and let United screw him and his patients over?

Not at all, just pointing out how hypocritical it is to complain about someone being childish (who actually wasn't) when doing the most childish thing you can on an internet message board.

Also again, where is this "tantrum" you keep talking about? He let out a scream sure, but I'm pretty sure that's a natural reaction to having your head bashed against a metal armrest.

That actually is a different angle video than the usual one, but it doesn't change anything.
At about 0:07 is when the guard starts dragging him out of his seat. That's when he screams.
You make it sound like he was throwing a fit until the heroic security guard came in. He didn't yell until they attacked him. Again, hardly an unreasonable response to being dragged out of your seat and slammed into an armrest.

They are technically a private business, but unlike a real private business that would go out of business if they ran poorly enough, this isn't actually possible for United Airlines, because the U.S. government won't allow them to fail, and shovels them money to ensure they don't.

you're going to have to clarify just what you're trying to say here.

The "free market" is exactly what has created these situations in the first place. There has been a consistent downward pressure on prices, to the point where airlines have to keep their profit margins razor thin and cut corners wherever they can simply to compete and stay in business.

Unless the government steps in and sets some ground rules - like, say, making overbooking flights illegal - shit like this will continue.

Airlines have a reputation as being a relatively shitty mode of transportation subject to overbookings, delays, lost luggage, and a small country's worth of tacked-on fees and nickle-and-diming. Not all of the inconvenience is the airline industry's fault - some of it is simply inherent to the mode of transportation - but the free market has done nothing to fix any of those issues; if anything, it's at the root of nearly all of them.

ok... so are you saying that just because you can EXPECT a response, that means the response is justified?

because as i said earlier

i'm not talking about whether the airline was within their rights are not

i said if someone attacks you you're going to have a negative response.

I hope he sues and makes a pretty penny off of united.

if what troll police said is correct about the contract one agrees to when buying a ticket, the traveler in question has absolutely no case and won't make a dime.

lol this is wishful thinking

united is probably self insured and will offer him a settlement before they file suit because settling for some amount is worth way less than any bad publicity a lawsuit would bring them

He will definitely get money out of them. Not for him being refused a seat, but because they man handled him. Hell, he could probably argue for pain and suffering since it was there for the world to see as a result of their practice. I'm guessing if he sued United would just settle.
