I should re-listen to this another time but honestly this album didn't do much for me. I felt like GKMC and TPaB were both much stronger albums. http://www.metacritic.com/music/damn/kendrick-lamar It's beating Pimp a Butterfly by 1 point and Good Kidd by 5. Which surprises me honestly. I feel like both albums were straonger as a whole as well. It's more on the interpretation of the listener than it is Kendrick flat out telling you what's up. This album is life.
Kenny captures the yin and yang concept beautifully throughout the album. The blind lady that guns down Kenny in blood is a physical representation of the verse that Ken's cousin, Carl Duckworth repeats thorughout the album, Deuteronomy 28 "The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart." and also imo the more well known 'an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind'. Kendrick is subliminally saying that his people, the (Israelites)need to take more responsibility for the 'curses' afflicted on them and not blame the rest of the world for their problems. Very controversial subject I know, but this is why he made such an introspective album imo to force people to look inside themselves and go damn we all just people when it all comes down to it. Then in Duckworth you see why Kendrick would think that way because had it not been for his father's act of peace toward Top his dad could have been shot, and Kendrick's story is a whole lot different and we don't get to experience Kendrick's music. His main point is that every one of your actions has consequences, sometimes unimaginable, so you need to think before you act and lose your head over some dumb s***, which is the type of behavior that's prominent in the hood. Least that's what I got from it. Man I love this album, truly dope shit. Kendrick is amazing --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
