Tough question.

If you end up investing all of what you get from either option, and assume a conservative 3% yield per year, the $5k per month beats out the $1m after about 24 years. Less conservative estimates are better for the $1m option though.

$1m would be a good amount to have invested somewhere, but if that's all it is, I would probably not want to let it affect my standard of living very much, since I'd keep it out of my day to day finances.

The $5k on the other hand (assuming it's tax free) is equivalent to a roughly $80000 raise, which is pretty significant, and I could use that when planning my day to day spending.

I think the $1m is probably better for the long term in my case, so I'd probably choose that.

$5K/Month hands down.

even at my worst with drinking and drugs, it was difficult to spend $2K/Month.

$5k/month would still leave a great deal for a better life than i had at my best pre-2008.

5K/Month

While the Million can be invested and potentially yield better results, but no one is talking about the flip side where your investments tank and you lose everything.

The 5K a month is essentially doubling my salary. I will take that. I could quit my job and live normally, or keep working and increase my standard of living.

Works for me.

I'm 24 yrs old. If I had $1 million, I'd invest in properties and cash out with way more than $5,000 each month over time.

Also, tomorrow is never guaranteed, for those of you who would take the $5k a month.

Im choosing 5K a month because if you count out investments, 5K would end up being more over the course of a life. Plus it keeps me from wasting it all.

you clearly weren't very deep into drinking or drugs if you found it difficult to spend $2k on both in the span of an entire month

I was trying to get fucked up, not wreck my life in the process. I was also working 60 hours a week back then and paying rent in one of the top 10 most expensive cities in the country at the time. Even at my worst there were lines I wasn't going to cross for reasons I'm not getting into here and now.

If I'm looking to start a business, the million.

If I just want to do whatever I want for the rest of my life, without the stress of having a million, the 5k a month.
