I've been using the same one for years, but I think last year they increased their rate. It's still pretty cheap I guess, under $30 total for both federal and state returns.

Was just wondering if there was any cheaper ones.

I just use the Turbotax online site. I've never paid anything for it.

My taxes aren't really complicated though.

I use H&R Block's online thing. It's free for the basic return and then you can pay for extra stuff like having a human being look it over to see if you missed anything and stuff like that. Canada though so YMMV.

I did it through my Credit Karma account this year. They got me the same return that Turbo Tax was going to get me but they didn't charge me for the extra convenience features that Turbo Tax wanted to charge me for.

Free File for Federal tax and CalFile for California state tax. Oddly enough despite earning less than the stated amount of $64,000 I am still able to use the Free File website.

I think I might give Credit Karma a shot.

That isn't odd; it's if you earn more than $64,000 that you aren't supposed to be able to use free file

I've used H&R Block for the past two years

Are you sure? In the website if you click the link for $64,000+ it sends you to Free File. If you click the link for less than $64,000 it sends you to a list of other third party tax service providers. Some are free but some have requirements to them to be free. Maybe I misspoke, I meant the Free File Fillable Form website. The only reason I started using the latter was because my friend said he wasn't paying any service fee and he earns $80,000ish a year.

Credit Karma wouldn't verify me for some reason.

Used Taxslayer again. Made damn sure I picked all the free stuff. I picked the option that said Free Federal and Free State. Made sure not to click anything with an asterisk that said it would add money later. Got to the end and they charged me $49.
