For school stuff, hispanic so you can get AA
For jobs, don't say hispanic so you can actually get some interviews

A lot of the good paying white collar jobs discriminate their applicants so you wont even land an interview if your last name doesn't sound white or asian that went to a good school.

I technically dont fit into any of these categories




also everyone keep in mind this is in san francisco (super liberal) and that i have a college degree ( top 40 school) in neuroscience

Usually applications will ask if you're Hispanic first, then ask what race you are (White/Black/Asian/Native American/etc)

Most Mexicans are mestizos, they're mixed race between European and Amerindian ancestry. You rarely see like actual Amerindians from Mexico in the States. Obviously for some people when they think of Hispanic they think of a brown person with mixed facial structures since that's how a lot of people from LatAm look like here in the States. Of course Hispanics have a wide range of looks. Comparing someone from Guatemala to Uruguay to Cuba yields a wide variety of looks.

I always mark both or "mixed race" on forms. Factually and legally it's correct despite me not looking like Dwayne Johnson.

What they really want is "what color is your skin, what race does physical features resemble ". But legally you don't have to give them that generalized answer that they prefer so they can simplify their statistics for political purposes.

Like if you're legitimately half black, but look more Asian...feel free to mark which ever one is going to give you more benefits when "mixed-race" isn't offered (because it should be). It's not your fault you genuinely fall into more than one group. It's not your fault the system in place doesn't always account for that.

Fuck I've had employers hire me for racial diversity because I'm half Native American. Funny thing is I look white rofl. So I got questioned on tribal status, lineage, etc. Paperwork and tribal administrations all checked out, critics had to eat crow. As long as you got the official papers to prove your status, they can't touch you.
