I feel like my fingers are about to bleed after 15 seconds of holding the strings down for a chord.

My fingers hurt 'cause I haven't grown calluses. I wonder how long it takes to grow calluses. I bet that's something you could learn on the internet. Tomorrow night I'm going to learn to use the internet

I bought an electric guitar years ago. I just didn't enjoy practicing. It felt like way too much effort to just play a note. Having short fingers didn't help.

That's the thing about me also, kind of, I'm too vain to risk calluses, haha, I don't WANT TO GET calluses, I like my fingers the way they are, hopefully, so I'd rather not invest in callusing my fingers up.

This right here. I have short little sausage fingers. Seems like everyone, women included, have longer fingers then me.

Just keep at it. Also, I highly recommend purchasing Rocksmith. Extremely good teachings tool when you consider the price. ($40-$60).

I used to suck at it, but now after VERY casually practicing for a few years I can play pretty much whatever semi decent-ish first try except for solos.

If you really want to put in some hard ass practice (which I didn't) you could shred in no time.

I'm played for thirteen or fourteen years now. My fingers have permanent callouses. I can even strum without a pick, or finger pick, without any issues. It's just practice.

Bass strings are harder to hold down, how is that better for callouses? (I don't actually play either, genuinely curious.)

They're thicker so they distribute the force more I'd wager

Honestly, the line between being a good and bad guitar player is the willingness to commit. Everybody in this topic who posted some BS excuse about short fingers or it being too hard are the type of people who are objectively bad and untalented.

Keep it up, TC. That' ALL you have to do to get good.

I wish I could say that there is some magic trick, but there isn't. Almost everyone is just like you when they start. It takes years of practice to become good at any instrument. That's it. Just practice, practice, practice. That's it. It sucks, but it's the trade-off for being able to express yourself through music.

I guess that is true of pretty much any art form though. Only a fraction of a fraction of a fraction are born good.
