Zelda. Totally redefined open world design, and is the biggest leap forward for games since Uncharted 2. In a weird way it makes good on the promise of MGSV.

Also high praise to Persona, Nier, and Resident Evil 7, but you know, Zelda.

Also Night in the Woods should totally be on here over Mass Effect.

I honestly wouldn't have put Andromeda or Tales of Berseria because they're honestly not that great. I wouldn't have MK8D in either since it's just a better version of Mario Kart 8. Would have put Night in the Woods, Hollow Knight and what Remains of Edith Finch instead since those are really highly rated. But being indie, I guess they get ignored here. But at the same time it kind of doesn't matter.

Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 are the only true GOTY contenders right now. And to be honest, baring any unexpected E3 announcements, the only games still to come that have a chance to compete with them are Red Dead Redemption 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. I consider them the "Big Four" of 2017.

honestly if we're talking about games that shouldn't be on here, I'd look at Zelda and Persona because you know before you even vote that's where the vast majority of the votes will go.

I don't think Berseria hangs here, but to say it's not that good isn't right. It's considered by most to be the 2nd or 3rd best game in the series (B8's Symphonia obsession not withstanding). If you're not big in the series in the first place that's fine, but this is really damn good Tales game.

As someone who has played hundreds of hours of Gacha, FE:H is impressively boring. Dropped off in no time.

I have beaten Nioh, Horizon Zero Dawn, Night in the Woods and the Hacknet Labyrinths DLC

Nioh is one of my favorite games ever and my GOTY right now. Horizon is incredible, especially because nobody was expecting it to have an amazing story, which it does. I teared up twice during it. I like it a lot more than Zelda, and stopped playing Zelda to finish Horizon. Night in the Woods is one of the best games of its type. The Labyrinths DLC for Hacknet is terrifying and makes my heart race and is just great in so many ways.

Love what I've played of Zelda, Nier, Resident Evil, Gravity Rush 2 and Persona but have a long way to go on those. Looking forward to playing more Flinthook, Hollow Night, Paradigm and Thimbleweed Park. Need to buy Yakuza 0 and just bought Battlegrounds

Semi has put Nier:Automata at the top of his Fav Games EVER list, game must be a top contender for GOTY in that case.

I somehow expect Yakuza Kiwami to be better than Yakuza 0. Y1's plot is a bit of a mess, but maybe that was in part due to the dub. I hear they've added a lot more story content too.

Again, I feel like this poll is really discounting the great Indie games that came out. Like Night in the Woods but also like Hollow Knight and What Remains of Edith Finch. I haven't played the last of those three yet but the other two are really enjoyable experiences.

Hollow Knight in particular I feel is really underappreciated. It's a really charming cartoonish gothic metroidvania game that really deserves more attention than it's gotten but it came out just before Horizon, Zelda and Nier so it got pretty ignored.

Those 3 should absolutely replace Mass Effect, Tales of Berseria and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (which shouldn't even count) imo.

we aren't equipped to deal with the number of quality games we see every month. this has been happening for years. I made a comment earlier in this topic about how FF15 might be one of the best 100 games of 2016, and I meant it. Final Fantasy XV, a game that reviewed pretty well, was by review aggregates the ~125th best game of last year. this is just an aggregate of professional opinions and not some objective standard (not that such a thing is even possible), but I think it illustrates my broader point of how there are too many games for any one person to keep up with. you will always miss out on something. one of the best reviewed games this year, Bleed 2, was played by maybe 3000 people. Hollow Knight, an acclaimed Metroidvania, came out mere weeks before Rain World, another acclaimed Metroidvania, and has 5x the sales. all you can do is support the art that you like. buy the games, talk about the games, celebrate the devs.

as for Edith Finch, I played it last week. I liked it! I talked about it a bit in the games topic:

What Remains of Edith Finch is a vivid, imaginative game worth playing. I think it's going to draw a lot comparisons to Gone Home with the intent of being pejorative, but I think there's something there. Like Gone Home, in Edith Finch you're exploring a home, learning about its suffocating history as your mind races. You pace the halls waiting for tragedy to strike. That unease never leaves you because you experience the history of the houses inhabitants in real time, taken away by first hand accounts of life and loss or wonderful visual metaphors for depression. Some of these stories are short, others comprise the entire game, but the creativity and variety of ways you see someone else's life is remarkable. Anything is possible in this house.

And as far as Hollow Knight being overlooked, I don't agree? The game reviewed well, and is one of the best-selling games of the year on the only platform it's available on. ~100k for an indie game with a dev time of two and a half years for three people is pretty good.

I guess I mean by the media. It doesn't have nearly as many reviews as some other big indie games.

If we're talking about mobile games, then the biggest snub is Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.

...Even if I'm pretty sure that the game is on the same server as Japan, which came out in November for them.


I actually like FE Heroes and still play it from time to time. I do find it funny that I'll see people (including a real-life friend) calling it among the best gacha mobile games out there, and I'll just sit there thinking that I'd rather play Final Fantasy Record Keeper or Brave Exvius instead.

Finished Persona 5. This is without a shadow of a doubt the best game I've played in years and I honestly don't know how to rank it in my Top 10 but I know it is at the very least Top 10 if not Top 5. Amazing game. Lived up to every expectation I had being my most anticipated game of all time. On to New Game+
