What's with pushing Perfect Dark so hard (in the bracket and now the match pic)? I feel like GSC is representative to a larger range of people. Yeah yeah, 2 Nintendo games, but now we have 2 Nintendo 64 games.

I'm more surprised that he isn't trying to further the narrative that the Chrono franchise is actually worth shit by giving the fourth slot to Chrono Cross. The game absolutely wrecked the casuals in BGE3, and it even surprised us in GotD (because our only previous exposure to it in contests was it eating SFF hard from FFIX in BGE2 and Serge eating it harder from Tidus in CBVII) It'd be almost justifiable, and the more I look at 2000, the more I think that it can go a lot farther than I previously thought. Let's look on a game-by-game basis vs. 1997:

Majora's Mask vs. FFVII: All Square games, even FFVII, seem to grow weaker every time we see them, while Majora's Mask still seems to be one of the strongest Zelda games. This actually could go either way.
FFIX vs. SotN: 1997 gets wrecked.
GS vs., um, Goldeneye? Fallout? Who cares; GSC would've beaten SotN too.
Perfect Dark vs. the other one: ...Okay we already know GE wins the SFF against PD.
Deus Ex vs. wait what is this shit, why is Goldeneye the only N64 game in 1997's roster when it probably wouldn't even beat MK64 or SF64 one-on-one? Goddamnit, Bacon, if you are literally using Goldeneye beating MK64 with SMRPG in the poll in 2009 as justification for thinking GE is the strongest N64 game of 1997...oh. Huh. Well, I'm not surprised that MK64 missed BGE3 completely, but SF64, too? Either way, somehow the remaining two games on 1997's list are Age of Empires and PaRappa the Rapper, which actually give off the impression of 1997 being shallower than it actually is because seriously that is weak.

Also, we've proven that systems aren't taken into account, but 2000 has the PS2 and 1997 just has something I've never heard of. Either way, ever since Crono lost to Missingno, every bracket has been carefully crafted to make sure that anything Chrono-related is never in a position to lose a match that it can't easily justify losing. (Not that it always works: Frog/Magus still managed to lose to Alucard/Dracula in RR, not that anyone cares about RR.) Furthermore, it usually gets at least one chance to look more impressive than it actually is. People were calling CT a beast after R2 in BGE3, conveniently forgetting that its monstrous performance came against a game that Chrono Cross beat in GotD, and then miraculously restored FFX to its GotD levels when it failed to break 35% against CT in R3 when they'd been raking it over the coals for the previous two rounds after it shat the bed and proved once and for all that FFVII is literally the only Square game with a shelf life over a decade (well, maybe FFVI; that actually seems to grow stronger over time somehow.) So letting CC ride the coattails of MM/FFIX/GS would be entirely in character with "the narrative".

I'm...starting to believe that the pics are largely being determined by the seedings for BGE3. Not entirely, obviously, because lol FFX-2. But Goldeneye as the N64 representative for 1997 over MK64/SF64/DKR and GTAV leading off 2013 even though it's been proven time and time again that that GTA sucks in contests are both things that suggest that Allen is taking BGE3 as gospel. Except, you know, just the seedings, because 2015 leads off with The Witcher 3 (a 3-seed) rather than freaking Undertale (a 6, I think.)

CT repeated it's performance against FF10 by demolishing SSBM until the rallies bailed it out. CT went 4 for 4 in looking like it was competitive for being the #1 game on the site.

Makes perfect sense. 50-50 shot that's your first wild encounter, and it's far more memetic than Pidgey even with "Bird Jesus" (even though it's mainly a GSC NPC that made it memetic. It would be almost like using a Goomba for 1985.

...Say, yeah, when are we going to get our "generic enemy" contest? I want to see one with all the iconic enemies--though I wonder what sort of series limits should be put on it?

Actually, we need this contest because it's the one contest where Legend of Zelda might actually lose. Which LoZ enemy would even be the strongest, a Moblin? An Octorok? A Stalfos? I don't think any of those would be able to stand up to Goomba or even Shy Guy (which you might be able to get in alongside Goomba even with a one-per-series limit by nominating it for the Yoshi's Island series), or Cactuar (or whatever other Final Fantasy enemy you want), or a Dragon Quest Slime...depending on which game's pics it got, it might not even be able to beat a Kremling or a Waddle Dee! Obviously, Ocarina of Time sprites would help, but "first appearance" would ruin most of the LoZ enemies because they'd be stuck with Zelda 1 sprites.

The match pic thing has been the most annoying feature of this contest so far - predicting which years would win without knowing what games would be featured makes the whole thing feel a bit like a crapshoot, even if most matches were predictable regardless (I should have been able to call 2011 > 2006 without it, but still).

Allen confirms that user made pics start in round 3, which we all kinda guessed, but still.

If you put the x-stats of the games in the pic for both years into the x-stat estimator (gamefaqscontests.com) 1996 wins, but if you replace perfect dark and deus ex with diablo ii and pokemon then 2000 wins.
