http://www.gamesindustry.biz/amp/2017-05-02-nintendo-now-believes-switch-can-reach-wii-sales-levels

In an investor Q&A following Nintendo's earnings announcement, which revealed a five times increase in profits, president Tatsumi Kimishima shed some further light on his company's intent to satisfy Switch demand and ultimately make a profit on the hardware.

Thanks to the rapid sales pace of the Switch, Nintendo has already reacted by greatly increasing the amount they can manufacture, Kimishima said. And in fact, "Planning to ship 10 million units means that we actually plan to produce more than that including units in our warehouse and in-transit product." Importantly, once Nintendo ships its 10 million units, profitability on each unit sold isn't far off. "Volume efficiencies will start to emerge once we produce the 10 million units we expect to ship this fiscal year, but we will not get the benefit of this right away," Kimishima explained.

With big titles like Arms, Splatoon 2 and, most important of all, Super Mario Odyssey coming this year, Kimishima believes demand will get even stronger. He said the production model takes that fact into account. Furthermore, given the portable nature of the Switch, Kimishima noted, "...we think there will be households that feel as though one is not really enough."

Continuing on that point, Kimishima said that's one factor for why Nintendo now believes that Switch could match the popularity of the Wii, which went on to generate an installed base of over 100 million.

"For us, being able to reach an installed base of more than 10 million units is fundamental to creating a strong business... [It] will give publishers and the rest of our business partners a sense that the future of Nintendo Switch is more promising," Kimishima said.

"The truth is we want to raise the installed base of Nintendo Switch up to the same level as Wii. As we mentioned during our presentation, Nintendo Switch in America had the fastest start of any Nintendo hardware, despite launching in March. In the video game business, it's important for consumers to feel that a sales momentum is going to grow, and we are setting a standard with Nintendo Switch to release a continuous string of major software titles from now on. And if our sales go according to our plan this fiscal year, we will be able to see Nintendo Switch gaining the momentum in which it can approach relative parity with Wii afterwards."

I suppose if they support it with several different models it's not an impossibility. Won't be an easy achievement though.

Yeah right, like maybe beating Wii U sales level sure, but beating Wii sales level is just wishful thinking.

It's possible if they DRAMATICALLY improve how they're currently handling it. This console certainly seems like it'll be better than the Wii U, but that isn't really saying much.

Not while 3DS is still getting more retail games than Switch it won't. If Nintendo wises up and goes all in on Switch as its only pillar, maybe. Eventually.

Is it that crazy? 3DS is past the 70 million mark. Add the Wii U and you get 80-85 million Nintendo platforms sold this decade. And the Wii U bombed hard. I think that's the sorta logic they're going with.

I don't think supply has quite met demand yet. They're still limited by the amount they're shipping at this point.

The Wii attracted the casual and non-gaming market largely because motion controls (at least for a whole system) were something almost entirely new. Tablet gaming is old news at this point.

At least they didn't go with the dumbassed naming idea this time though. Non-gamers generally didn't know that the Wii U was a separate system from the Wii or the difference between a DS, a DSi, a 2DS, a 3DS, and a New 3DS. It might seem obvious to us, but considering Nintendo largely markets to kids, it can be extremely confusing to the non-gamer parents who are buying the systems and games for those kids.

I don't think it very likely, but as long as they release quality titles and have strong third-party support, they'll get a very strong following.

On top of that, this isn't even a proper tablet. If it were that could've seriously helped them get a fair share of that market. As it stands the most they'll likely do is pass Gamecube sales.

You guys know that what the Switch is will likely be drastically different in 2 years? And will be even more drastically different in 4 years?

Did the 3DS sell 70+ million with the OG model, OS and price?

I don't see why it's unrealistic. It's catching on with the casuals as a bunch of retailers are saying that they're seeing types other than the regular Nintendo fan buying it, and we have all these anecdotal comments about people who haven't played Nintendo systems in a long time buying it. It has the momentum and Nintendo just needs to capitalize and keep the ball rolling. They have Splatoon coming and Pokemon in the horizon and with big 3rd party support (Western in conjunction with what they got with the 3DS) they can make it happen.

yeah if they can actually get some games they might sniff 50 million

unfortunately Zelda(which is on another console already), a Mario Kart port, and a Mario game, plus some games that the casual fan probably never heard of, won't carry it to 100+ mil

The only way I could see it actually happening is if they do go all in and make it their only platform for both the console and handheld market. Pokemon alone would make a lot of people buy the system and if there's no dedicated handheld for it to be released on, they'll buy the Switch.

That said, the way Nintendo handled the 3DS's remodels is probably going to make me wait at least 2 years before buying it. The upgrade to XL was one thing, but releasing the New 3DS and then locking VC's SNES games to it was bullshit.

Damn it sure sucks that no games come out after the first year of a consoles life. Otherwise it might have had a chance.

It's pretty much guaranteed this is going to happen. Nintendo aren't splitting games between consoles and handhelds once they're done making 3DS games (and they've already downscaled quite a bit).

I don't know if it'll reach Wii levels, but I think it's shaping up to be a success. I haven't gotten one yet, but I plan to once I see a few more games for it Zelda and Mario Kart aren't enough just yet. I'm holding out for Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei.
