Okay so like

I understand companies are trying to address the issues through commercials. I understand that they're backfiring.

But why aren't people asking the important question here?:

WHO THE HELL IS GOING ONLINE AND SITTING THROUGH A WHOLE THREE MINUTE COMMERCIAL FOR NO REASON

It just makes no sense. Where are these airing? Is there literally nothing else to do for two minutes of your life?

The tough questions, people. They need asking.

That means the viral marketing worked.
"This three-minute online-only ad deeply offended me for some damn reason. You should watch it and be offended too!"

I'm in the same boat. (I mean, if almost 2 years counts as "recent"). But like, I've literally never seen a place with a 2+ minute ad (YouTube, Pornhub, etc.) that doesn't let you skip it after 10-15 seconds. However, the one exception I can think of is Hulu. They do sometimes have giant commercial blocks that you can't skip. Even those are usually bunches of 15-30 second commercials. But hypothetically, let's say Hulu ran the Pepsi ad during a giant, unskippable 2 minute block - WHY DON'T PEOPLE GO TO DIFFERENT WEBSITES FOR TWO MINUTES OR PULL OUT THEIR PHONES OR GO PEE OR SOMETHING!??! I mean, it's not like it, oh, I don't know, HAS AN INDICATOR IN THE CORNER OF HOW LONG THE COMMERCIAL BREAK IS OR ANYTHING

I just can't process it. My brain is literally rejecting the possibility that people our age still actually sit down and watch commercials.

That's a fair point. But it still gets me back to the question of why people are watching it in the first place. Like, I get that at some point, when the ad first came out, somebody must have sat down and been like "Wow! This ad is offensive!" - I'd like to find that person and ask them why they voluntarily watched a commercial for 3 minutes.

I get that once it goes viral, it's getting views because people are telling people to watch it. Which is legitimate. I'm more likely to watch something if someone recommends it. But why the fuck would someone subject themselves to a god damned commercial?

"Hi there, Pepsi Twitgrambookedin followers! Here's our new ad. It would just be a shame if someone was offended and repostweeted it, or complained to Huffingsalonjones or something, wouldn't it?"

I understand that, but it's not like Pepsi would literally tell people their ad is offensive. The goal is for people to find that out themselves. But again, it's like - who was the first person to decide that it was offensive? If I had a conversation with that person, my first question wouldn't be "why is this offensive?" (because literally anything can be offensive these days), but rather, "When a commercial came on, why did you sit down and willingly watch it?"

They play long ads at movie theatres before a film, or at least they do where I live. I don't know if these ads ever played at a theatre though. Maybe they also play at sports events? I don't watch sports.

A good point that I hadn't considered. I'll keep an eye out when I'm out at Guradians of the Galaxy 2 this weekend. But regardless - if commercials are on, it means the movie hasn't started it yet, so of course I'll just whip out my phone or keep chatting with my lovely lady friend or whatever.
