Yes, assuming you don't go to an expensive private university and get a useless degree.

Takes out tons of student loans to graduate from college with a degree.

Starts getting jobs, and realizes the only reason I need these higher paying jobs is so I can pay off my crazy loan payments.

It's all a scam.

That's your problem then. should have networked around more/gotten an apprenticeship. That's the real strength of college meeting people who can help you get a leg up in your goals is just as important as getting the knowledge to accomplish your goals.

In NY, it'll pretty soon be the equivalent of a high school degree because college is about to become free here.

Go to college to learn about a job

Job trains you to do job.
Can we just skip straight to the job training?

the "working in my field" thing is such bullshit

if you are offered a job not in your field, you can tolerate the work, and you're making good money, who cares? the whole "i must get a job relevant to my degree" mentality goes away pretty fast once you graduate college in my experience

College is not 100% required, but remember that when you are looking for a job, you are trying to sell your labor on the open market. If you have skills, you're going to be able to sell that labor for a lot more than if you have no skills or experience or anything whatsoever. These skills don't necessary have to come from college, there are trade schools for people who are into that stuff. What is NOT a good idea is thinking that you're going to be living the high life selling your labor on the open market with no skills or impressive experience, especially if you don't take any effort to further your career beyond this point and instead just remain at that level. That would like, totally suck, right?

A master's in electrical engineering? Why? So you can end up working at Baskin-Robbins?

My college degree literally paid for itself in a matter of 1.5 years (in the form of better job/higher pay). Not to mention the professional growth I've had over the last 6-7 years. I make way more than I would have otherwise.

Welcome to real life, where what you studied in your major for two years at age 18 does not determine what you will do for the 40+ years you spend in the workforce.

The point of college is to get a piece of paper that says you have a Bachelor's Degree, so when you apply for jobs, the application tracking systems do not immediately throw out your resume because it does not contain college information on it.

The reason we go to work is to make money and support our lifestyles, so if you can tolerate the job, who cares what work you're doing anyway?

and I doubt that's on hard work alone, your personality, your relationships with people and how you carry yourself are to blame for your success. I dispose people like you. It makes me wish the world was destroyed every single day. That's how you succeed in life, not by being a cog and wallflower.

Working in your field is the holy grail of the 2010's.

Look at it this way. If you don't have a degree, "your field" is the 3x4 mat behibd the grill at McDonald's... if you're lucky.

Some people genuinely enjoy their work.

I barely get paid for what I do, and I'd probably continue to do it even if I didn't get paid.

I usually go home thinking about work and/or do some work from home before bed.

Some tasks are tedious and stressful, like any job. But the work is so interesting that it doesn't really matter. I can go into work today and discover another facet about how the brain works. That's pretty fucking awesome.

You despise me for...being productive with my time and abilities? I didn't do anything that any other focused individual couldn't do. Part of "the way I carry myself" included prioritizing school, making good long term decisions, and not blowing off responsibilities during high school and college. FYI, i worked a full time job during high school and college and I never got a job based on someone I knew. I simply applied, do research, and interview well based on tips from the internet and common sense.
