So this white female professor wrote an article saying that, if you support transgendered people for many of the common reasons, it's at least possible that there are transracial people you should support (transracial meaning that a person internally feels themselves to be a race other than what they are by external criteria, as Rachel Dolezal supposedly feels). Then the article angered a lot of people, and the journal that published it apologized and said that it should have been rejected.

Anybody have any thoughts? I can't read the actual article, so I don't know how many arguments about the difference between race and gender it ignored; but if it is that obviously bad if you know a lot about these issues, it's unfortunate that the journal didn't reject it and keep the professor from making a fool of herself.

If a male is born in a female's body it's scientifically possible, or vice-versa. Race is learned. I bet if you took people out of the Amazon jungle and found a way to accurately test them (they'd have no exposure to other cultures or races), there'd be nobody that related to another race more.

Another, less objective possibility is interviewing adopted kids who grew up in communities mostly like their adopted parents (of a different heritage). Other factors are at play with this one, because racism is a thing, etc., but still.

To be fair, there's actually an argument to be made there. If we differentiate between biological gender and the social constructs and expectations of gender imposed by culture as a whole, and we forcefully establish that the two are not explicitly the same (ie, someone can have a gender identity that doesn't necessarily match their biological sex), then it opens the door to questions of cultural appropriation and why it's wrong for someone of one ethnic group to adopt the mannerisms or traits associated with a different group.

If a suburban white teenager feels like he identifies more with inner city black youth, and thus perceives himself as "black on the inside", how is that different from someone who is born a boy but grows up thinking of themselves as a female?

Or, for that matter, what about people who swear that they have animal souls inside them, and they're really another species entirely? How can we draw a line and say that "YOUR arbitrary perception of personal identity is wrong but this other person's is right?" In all of those cases, it ultimately boils down to someone's sense of self rebelling against their biology.

This is how SJWs sees race and gender.

1) A man wears a dress--he's now transgendered and you must respect their choice.
2) A white person wears 'black' clothes--he's now committed a serious crime called cultural appropriation.

For the first case, one would not call it gender appropriation. You could lose your job if you do make this claim.

For the second case, culture is not deemed to be a spectrum, but somehow each culture has finite, explicit boundaries. Any mixing of culture is forbidden, and you could lose your job if you do make this claim.
