For real, though, the idealized 50s stuff is silly. You had all about 1 decade of Post-War prosperity before the social authoritarian underpinnings holding those idealized images together unraveled. There's nothing to hate in the image. It's well made and the idea of a traditional family isn't inherently wrong by any stretch. But I know that people who use this image are doing it in a way that over-idealizes a very, very brief period in American history.

If we're talking about decades ago? Then yeah, they pretty much were, socially speaking. You were conditioned to fit a role deemed "appropriate" for your gender. This is why second-wave feminism became a thing; Women were not treated equally to men. Wage disparity actually existed at the time. There's nothing wrong with being a housewife like the woman in the picture. The issue is when this is forced upon people, which is pretty much was. --- Enjoy movies and television? Check out my blog! yeah, they pretty much were So you're wrong Zero_Destroyer posted... You were conditioned to fit a role deemed "appropriate" for your gender. You still are. Gender roles are as a result of the existence of gender and reflect what people find desirable in a potential mate. Zero_Destroyer posted... Wage disparity actually existed at the time. Aggregate wage disparity has always existed. There may have been legitimate discrepancies in per-job wages earned before the Equal Pay Act, but if modern times are any indication (since people are whining about muh aggregate wage gap now) choices were likely a large cause of inequal pay. Since that time period muh wage gap has barely decreased; you'd think if it was made illegal to pay people differently for the same job equity would've been achieved much faster https://www.pay-equity.org/info-time.html Zero_Destroyer posted... For the record, I know the wage-gap narrative today is silly and that women are effectively equal to men. Women are not conditioned today the same way they were 50-60 years ago. That era of America is gone, even if the third-wavers can't accept it.
My point is that the 1950s idealized family image is ignoring the social strife that existed beneath the clean presentation. If you want, I can refer the far stronger point of racism in the United States, since that's just as important to the point I'm making. --- Enjoy movies and television? Check out my blog!
