every canon game in the series is better than MGS3. It totally backtracks on everything MGS2 did, which isn't hard because MGS2 is a masterpiece of a game. It subverted all expectations of what a game is even supposed to be with a great storyline and the best meta-surrealism of the whole series. And it would have been the best way to end the series, too.

The only good thing about MGS3 was the final boss fight. That was just gorgeous.

MGS2 > MG2 > MGS4 > MG > MGPW > MGS > MGS3

I played through the whole series for the first time last summer, and everyone kept saying MGS3 was going to blow me away, and I was just left so... underwhelmed. The camera sucked (both ways), the bosses were easily broken, there wasn't nearly as much 4th wall breaking mayhem as MGS2 or MGS had. It didn't go on and on with rants and lectures like the other games did. It didn't even have those extremely movie-like cutscenes that the series is so fond of, or at least not as many.

Returning to it years later ,it has lost a lot of it's charme.The structure of the areas and the cameo system make the whole way to easy.The story is ok.I can't see the game as that eternal masterpiece some people claim it to be though.

This. MGS3 has the best self contained story imo, even better than MGS1. Has the best characters, a killer soundtrack, and some of the most satisfying twists and stylized moments.

See, I guess I don't see why self-contained is a positive. MGS was not self-contained at all lol. It relied on a whole bunch of stuff that happened (and didn't happen) in MG2. Frank and Big Boss and Metal Gear and a whole lot of stuff seems kinda odd if you don't know what happened. I can't really remember any twists that caught me as off guard as anything in MG1, 2, MGS1, 2, or 4.

The soundtrack to MGS3 was amazing, I will give it that. The main theme is a great song.
