A pastor enters the hospital to get another round of chemo, as he has cancer.

The chemo was a success, and his cancer has officially subsided. He says to his doctor: "You know who i'd like to thank for now being cancer free?"

His doctor replies:

"Jesus Christ, I hope you mean me!"

I don't get it

Did the doctor invent chemo?

No because its a pastor he might attribute his success to jesus christ, but the doctor hopes its him because he actually helped him get better.

I don't really get it either. I understand that the "Jesus Christ" part is because he's a pastor, but it's not an actual punchline. It's like something that might be written by a bad punchline generator that throws together related subjects

I feel like it would work better being spoken.

What is the doctor's religion?

Is the doctor supposed to be saying "Jesus Christ" incredulously, like "How dare you thank him?" Is he saying it like he hopes to Jesus that the guy thanks him? Or is he saying it just like a general exclamation? This is why the joke sucks

its like a play on words. the doctor, seeing the pastor would attribute his good health to jesus, calls him out on this by exclaiming jesus christ(like, when somebody is upset), and hoping he means himself, the doctor.

It doesn't work though. It's like saying you can use "hockey" as part of any punchline to a joke about Canadians

I saw on the news these two guys got arrested for stealing a calendar

Heard they each got six months

It would be better if the punchline was, "God dammit"
