God damn it. An entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables... slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man... no purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.

We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

Up until sophomore year of high school I was convinced I was gonna be a paleontologist because dinosaurs are the shit. Then I realized I actually wanted a stable income.

I'm a CPA now. I generally like it, but I sometimes wonder what could have been.

I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up
every job and volunteer thing I did in college, it related to children

now, I haven't seen a kid once in my job. I talk to cocky motherfuckers all day every day
if it didn't pay so well, I might just become a teacher

When I was a kid I wanted to be a policeman so I could protect the good guys from the bad guys. I eventually learned the "bad guys" aren't always so bad but also sometimes they're worse than I could have imagined as a kid.

The "good guys" aren't always so good either but that much doesn't really bother me.

To be fair my dad did say that was a stupid idea and that I wasn't gonna get any money being a vet in this country, so it's not like I needed to be an adult to have that dream crushed. It was crushed as early as 10, 12 years of age.

Being a vet is a very profitable career. It takes a lot of schooling but people will always want animals cared for or you can help out farm animals.

I took up being a vet assistant. Lots of positions come and go but it's not really bad work. Some places pay decently too. It's not all minimum wage. A lot of places pay closer to $12-$15/hr.

It's not the place to be rolling in cash but it's decent money.

I didn't want to be a plumber or something my heart isn't into.

You're not taking into account location or countries when you say "people" and "will always want animals cared for" .

True. I just assumed people generally want farm animals cared for at least since that's their money makers.

I think they just kill them?

But it's a good point, I'll ask around to see what the shepherds around here would do if one in their flock is sick. I think they already have enough experience to take action accordingly but it never hurts to ask.

I know they can generally treat a sprain or something but I figured shots, birthing troubles, infection etc need more medical attention.

If you went with large animals you'd be a mobile vet. I don't think a good chunk are outright killed but yes, a goat might be killed if it can't be fixed. It's a quality of life problem if they have a gimped leg.

A lot of smaller animals are more replaceable.

Veterinarians have a really high suicide rate because most of them do get into the field because they love animals, but a lot of times they're beyond saving or the owner can't afford expensive surgery, so they have no choice but to euthanize them. Years and years of this will break someone down.

I had no direction or specific dream job growing up. Some time late in high school I got into journalism.
So I did that for two years if college.
Then then made it glaringly obvious that lt you'll never make money. So I did a year of social work. Because helping people is nice? But that was horrible and boring.
So I did a year of conputer programming. But I couldn't handle the math.
So I did two years of biology. But by then I was depressed and beaten down from other life events.

Now I'd just like to be out of debt. And a park ranger.

Fuck, i am the same.

My younger naive self thought it was a,good job, it wasnt all about money and journalism was an honorable job, telling the world the truth etc.

To bad reality is isnt as wonderful as fantasy. Fuck having shitty pay, working on holiday and shilling about some politician whose the media you work for own a huge share, or black / smear campaigning the opposition's party. At best what you do is shilling for corporation and trick people buying shitty product that you write an article for.

Now i work at a corporation, yeah. A cog in the machine. eventually grow up and end up inheritting my father's ,business. I am still confident enough at least in my skills and intellect that i would run his company well.

I wish i wasn't raised in this bullshit "you can be anything, you have to chase your dreams, money isn't everything" culture that made special snowflakes thats plaguing my generation.

If i had ever a children, i would slap then with heavy amount of reality since childhood so they wont end fucked up and chasing "dreams" like i did. Because you grew up and the stuff you find awesome back then are actually shit and the shitty stuff you dislike back then become tolerable even preferable. It isnt perfect, but nothing is perfect. Nothing.
